So I've heard a few cases and reports of people with open wounds contracting this 'flesh eating virus' while in the saltwater on the coast. I am headed down to fish around south padre and wanted to see if anyone knew more about this disease and if there were precautions and safety steps to take while you're fishing. Really just want to know more about it so any comment or advice or maybe an article someone has seen on the subject, anything helps!

Short version: Don't go wading with open wounds.

I don't worry about it all.

I do wade fish areas with good current and water exchange.

Open wounds in back lakes or areas with little or no tide, plus alcohol, plus no hydration in the summer sun and plus a compromised immune system - you better be careful.

For sure, if I had a bad cut or open wound that bad, I'd wait until it healed.

I do clean up as soon as I get out of the water and I hydrate after I get out of the ol' SalH20 instead of drinking anything with alcohol in it.

I might have a glass or two of wine with my supper that night with my fresh fish filets, but that's about it.

I wade fish pristine waters so I really don't worry about it

We carry a bottle of peroxide, a good douche with it after the wade should take care of any nasties. That said, we don't wade back lake poot mud, and if there was an open wound that would be avoided.

i carry peroxide also and use it asap. the news media can get in a frenzy over a reported case of this, but they fail most of the time to investigate enough to see if the victem had another immune problem, like diabetes or hep c. every case that i've been close to had some immune factor involved. on also, i've never heard of a case of a child getting it in saltwater.

Like everyone has said, stay of the sewer mud without circulation. I went through this discussion last year when I went to Port O'Connor and Pat told me the same thing...stay outa the 'Poot Mud' in the back waters when wading. I covered up any abrasion I had with liquid bandage and sealed everything off and then cleaned with hydrogen peroxide when I got back. I'm still alive and kickin! I have controlled diabetes and I'm perfectly fine. The one guy that contracted it in Port O'Connor was morbidly obese--likely uncontrolled diabetes and drank like a fish.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

The best advise it to be educated about what to do and not do.

What not to do.. wade with open sores, or wade with compromised immune system, or weakened liver from drinking too much too often. Most of the ones getting the infection didn't know what level of immune system they had or not either. Sores on those with compromised immune system could be as small as a scabbed mosquito bite.

You are either strong enough immunologically and wound free to not get it in you or if you have a wound and you hit the water it gets into the flesh fast enough and once it's in, it's in. Washing down clean unwounded skin with anything is a waste.. it's either already in or not going to get in. Washing out a fresh cut that's acquired while on the water, for example a cut from an oyster or crab trap, with peroxide or betadine iodine is a good idea to reduce other bacterial levels but that also needs to be attended to at a clinic or emergency room. Tell them you were in saltwater as well and to do a culture for flesh eating bacteria.

The biggest factor is seeing the wound continue to get red or black and what you do at that point.. if ANY infection is evident get to hospital and tell them you were in saltwater and want to be treated for flesh eating bacteria.. and don't be nice about it. The people that loose limbs, or worse.. wait too long to get medical attention. Some people have been treated with minor antibiotics only to be sent home... then return again a little more demanding about it. Don't be that guy... be straight with the staff and tell them what you want and tell them what to look for.

I've waded the last 20 years in beach, bay, and stagnant marsh but I've never waded with a sore and my health is good and I rarely drink. I also know what my immune level is. I'm not wearing waders or anything, but I'm educated about what to do and not do, and what to look for after a wade. Many people contract it from the very oxygenated surf while swimming at the beach, so while stagnant waters may have a higher count, the surf has a sufficient count to contract it. Protect your feet. Most of us wade around in tennis shoes and get little cuts from the shell fragments that get in socks, or the shell bits rub you raw on the edge of the tennis shoe or on an ankle. Get some high quality neoprene socks that will keep these shell bits away from the skin is a big help.

Guess if I was worried about it a bunch, I'd just buy a cheap pair of plastic waders.

It will be Hot, but safer. richg99
