I've seen some decent sized cats pulled out of the area right next to the parking lot. I've only caught small ones there myself, but everyone says the catfishing is good over there.

I prefer to hike down towards the railroad bridge. Avoid the crowds at the dam and deeper/slower water. Have had good luck on cats, carp and buffs. Kids love it too for the hiking.

It's been at least 15 years since I dropped a line in fresh water, but I've been away from the gulf for 2 years now and after reading about llela I'm thinking of giving it a shot. I used to fish for cats in conroe all the time, just deopping bread balls or raw bacon on the bottom. Any advice particular to this location I should know?

Gear-wise all I have is the 7ft ugly stik and baitcaster I used for reds, currently rigged with braided 20 lb test. Will that work for big catfish? Also curious about hook size/type.

That is all you need. I use what I believe is a 6/0 wide gap circle hook for bigger cats with a chunk of cut bait or live bluegill. I normally hike down stream closer to the railroad bridge. Deeper holes and lots of bait.

If they released some water all he'll break loose. Few week ago when I was there to check. you can cross the river without getting wet. But the water is good my favor set up would be is top water if you're are close to the dam.. boober and 5 feet line hook and bait. Let it flow down reel back in before it get snagged in the tree. I did alot top water last year in that dam.I lost too many sinker near the dam lol. But if you walk deep down bottom rig is good as well. Shad are plenty there but llela dam cast net is not allow.

I've gone twice. First time didn't catch anything water was running at 800 or 900. Then this weekend went when it was at 300. Saw a ton off carp right below the dam and I the spill way. foul hooked one in the tail on accident. Didn't catch anything else using bluegill until my very last 4 inch bluegill. Hooked on to a massive gar right inside the dam area by the parking lot. Was thinking about going down the rocks to get a picture but a guy was trying to be helpful grabbed the line and it broke off. Also there were a bunch of people just wading in the water right below the dam cast netting the carp. I walked downstream a bit, but didn't make it to the railroad. I want it to be a good spot to fish but did far I'm not having much luck. I mostly like catching catfish but haven't seen many there.

you're probably right, but I saw them with both. In any case they aren't supposed to even have nets down there.

What is a good release rate for fishing off the top of the spillway or on the rocks/further down stream

If you are going to catch fish, get away from the crowds. The park hosts and even the game warden will tell you the fishing is better downstream of that area. I take a kids pole with bobber and small hook with corn to catch all the sunfish and bluegill I need. Set up 1 rod with cut bait, next has live bait and the last 1 or 2 have corn on them for the carp.

I'll have to try hiking farther next time. It seemed pretty shallow where I went but I was on the far side of the river.i don't think I was anywhere near the railroad bridge. Do you start on the parking lot side?

You were on the right side of the river, you just didn't go far enough.

Heading out too LLela tomorrow morning, going to fish for some cats I think. Any other species roaming around out there that might be worth targeting?

Fished this morning, caught a gar and foul hooked a buffalo. The bite was very slow nothing on the gulp dough bait nor the punch bait, shad was the only thing getting attention.
