I am sure this will probably end up being some sort of hybrid (which is how all of my previous ID posts have gone), but the red fin has me stumped. Maybe some sort of spawning colors? My dad caught this near Mena, Arkansas last week from the Mountain Fork, and said it was one of several he caught that looked identical. Any ideas what it is?

Also, as a bonus, he took a picture of this moth that was sitting beside the river. Looks like one of the crazy foam creations I create at the tying bench.

Never caught a Dollar Sunfish before nor have I ever seen one in person. Looking at photos of the Dollar Sunfish and seeing the areas where they can be caught I would say Fishwfly is probably right! thumb

Banker, I have caught some here in East Texas on the Neches River. Cool fish. Easy to confuse with small longear if you are not really looking.

I grew up fishing the Neches. These Hill Country waters are a lot clearer.

I agree! However the Neches just below the dam at lake Palestine is a clear water jewel most of the time during normal flow. One of my favorite places out here.

I grew up in Port Neches, so by the time it got down to me it was brackish water. Caught quite a few flounder out of that river when I was a kid.

Yes, thats a Dollar. I love fishing there. Beautiful water and lots of wildlife. I bet the ETX cougar visits that area.

I would also say dollar sunfish, but Ozark longear get really black with the turquoise specks. Blacker then that in adults, but could be a juvi Ozark longear.

Cool fish, thanks for sharing. It has the opaque trim on the ear like a longear. Do Dollar sunfish also have that trait?
