Any Tenkara rod users out there? Looking at getting my first one and any advise on rod selection.
Thanks

I am interested in seeing the responses on the Smurfs. I have a feeling that little creek we fish for Sandbass would be phenomenal with one of those! The only thing that scares me with that if you hook into a big fish I take it it's gone seeing as you have no drag system!

Depends on your price range really. A really great "all around" Tenkara rod that can handle good fish on 5x tippet is the Tenkarabum 36 as seen on Tenkarabum.com. I have fished Tenkara style for 4 years now. It's a great way to catch fish! I have even used larger fixed line carp rods ( Nissin Kyogi) and landed carp to 16 lbs on 7lbs line (no reel. The technique allows the rod to absorb the fight and forces you to be an angler. Takes it back to the basics. Rod, line, fish. I highly recommend it to anyone. I have yet to introduce someone to the technique who did not turn around and buy a rod. It replaced any fly rod I would use for smaller creeks, streams. On small water it is the most natural way to present a fly imo. Not uncommon for me to land larger fish on 5x or less. All about the anglers ability. Fun, Fun, Fun.

This one was caught on a Suntech GM Suikei Keiryu special 27 (9') small water type rod and 3lbs tippet.

What's the maximum casting distance? I like simplification, but I also need to cast way out to reach some of the places I fish.

Usually rod length line, but I have cast up to 20ft of like on 13-14ft tenkara rods with no issue. If you really need length look into Keiryu specific rods. Most cast a tenkara line/fly very well and are commonly seen over 20ft in length. TenkaraBum.com is a wealth of educational information as well.

Much obliged. I'll look into it but I commonly need to cast 40' or more.

I understand. One of the neat things tenkara has taught me through the years is how many fish I can catch in close ranges. It has its limitations for sure being a fixed line system. Very fun though!!

OK, what is really the difference between tenkara and a cane pole?

A Tenkara rod is really light, made of carbon fiber, telescopes down to short backpackable sizes, and is made to cast a light line and fly. Think of it more as a fixed line fly rod , than a stick for dropping bait. The Tenkara rod is graceful casting tool. The cane pole reference is very common out here in East Texas when people see me fishing. LOL. If you look at the history of Tenkara in Japan the original Tenkara rods were out of bamboo. Through the years it has evolved into the technology of today. I suggest anyone interested research and and watch some of the many videos online. Lots of info out there now. Better yet, find a buddy with a Tenkara rod and give it a try. Like I have said, most who try often buy. LOL.

Here is my 2 cents worth about Tenkara Fishing. I am a clutz. Overweight, over blind, clumsy, and most call me a royal pain in the A$$.
I have tried fly fishing and found I couldn't put all the pieces together. Someone on the forum suggested I try Tenkara and I have found my zeal for fishing again.
A couple other random thoughts about Tenkara. We have a lot of veterans returning from duty without both arms. Tenkara gives them a chance to get outside and fish.
I know I am close to dapping, cane pole fishing, or similar but I will never criticize another angler for his or her choice of equipment or what they fish for.
Okay, I want 2 cents from all of you. JP

I would be worried about loosing a big fishon a tekara rod as it makes it runs.

From what I have seen and experienced, Tenkara on small light rods is for little fish. There are some rods with enough backbone to turn a biggun, but I haven't played in that ballpark yet. JP

You'd be amazed at the size fish you can land with a Tenkara rod. ( Remember the average size fish caught in those big $$$ bass tournaments is just under 2 pounds. LOL )
By scaling down the size of your tackle, those little bluegill become a challenge... and a lot more fun to catch. My 13' 6", Tenkara USA rod weighs just 3 ounces.
My largest fish is a 4 pound 2 oz. peacock bass. The 4# test leader will land some fish a lot larger than you think. LOL.
