What transmission and rear axle do you have? That's almost too good to be true. But filling up at 100 miles leaves a lot of uncertainty. It it under-fills by much at all, your mpg can vary wildly with such a small amount driven.

3:21 gears 8 speed tranny 1st trip today with boat to lake and back 14.1 it pulled it well 20' CC. I sure hope it does even better I do not drive fast. Understand totally on short trip fill but had to!

Those are some great numbers. Can't blame you for being excited!

I find it really hard to believe till you say that. If you mind your speed and maybe more importantly acceleration, have favorable wind and topography you can coax some very impressive fuel mileage out of them.

A few years ago we commuted back and forth from my home in San Antonio to Choke Canyon for 3 or 4 days pulling a 20 foot center console with a 2011 chevy 1500 5.3. I traveled top speed 60-65 and was easy on the gas. One tank had a lot of idle because we were waiting out some rain and averaged over 14 mpg the other was ever so slightly over 15 mpg all with the boat. I did get passed a lot.

here is from today's trip to Dallas, it is just getting better

5.7 Hemi 17 Dodge 4x4
just 196 miles on it
it pulled my CC boat great but I can tell a big difference from my Ford Super Duty 4x4 diesel

Nice! Does the hemi use regular unleaded or 89+ octane?

OK, for what it is worth, without being verbose...

I just went through the same sort of thing a few years ago. If I buy a used Diesel, for around 20K, that I want to daily drive and tow with (6000 lb enclosed trailer for hundreds of miles) what do I want?

Fortunately for me, I have a good friend that knows more about Diesel engines and Diesel vehicles than everyone on this thread combined, including me. He designs them for a living and has been doing it for a very long time. We had a long discussion about the pros and cons of all the different options, who made what, V8 vs I-6, DPF, Urea, oil change intervals, fuel rail design, etc. etc.

Final answer? 2006 Dodge Diesel 2500, which is what I bought, and am very happy with.
Why? I-6 is the best layout for a turbo Diesel for technical reasons I won't get into. The Cummins I-6 5.9L 24-valve turbodiesel is a GREAT engine, arguably one of the best. It only comes in a 2500 and up so that meant 2500 or 3500. 2006 was the last year that engine was made without DPF, which brought a big hit on mileage.

How does it tow? GREAT. Towing a bass boat at 70 mph I get about 15 mpg, and it pulls it like its not even there, set the cruise and go. Normal daily driving, mostly highway, I get 21-23 mpg. Before anyone asks, this is hand calculated mileage, not using the truck computer which is notoriously optimistic on its mileage estimate. Many call it the lie-ometer. It's a small negative. I bought it used with 73K miles on it, and now has ~130K miles on it. Still loving it.

Main thing I don't like about it? Dodge cabs compared to the competition, especially Toyota (I have a first-gen Tundra I bought new), are meh. Not great, but they work. I have the normal 4 door with the regular length bed, not the Mega Cab with the shortened bed.

They put out some 2007's with the 5.9L.

Auto or manual? If its stock your fuel mileage is on the optimistic side, not unachievable but not set the cruise on 70 and go either.

I've got a buddy with the 2005 Cummins 2500, and his experience mirrors yours. Good towing mpg and daily driving mpg. Bulletproof reliable. But the rest of the truck Dodge put around that motor 12 years ago is falling apart.

Yes there were some 2007 non-DPFs IIRC. I found this one at a good price and jumped on it.

If I drive with a heavy foot the non towing mileage drops to 18-19 MPG. Towing the big trailer it gets 12-13MPG. The Tundra in the same conditions gets 17-18 MPG commuting, and 7 MPG towing the same big trailer at 60-65mph.

Bought a brand new 2017 GMC Sierra SLE with the Elevation package a couple of weeks ago. I installed a 2.5" levelling kit up front and added Rockstar wheels with 285/55/20 Toyo all terrain tires.
So far after about 300 miles I'm averaging 16-16.5 mpg doing about 60% city (stop and go, stop signs and stoplights) and 40% highway driving (about 70 mph).

What is the longest trip/# of miles you have calculated on? Have you run an whole tank and calculated the average on that?

S0 the fuel mileage numbers your reporting are what the trip computer says and not miles driven divided by gallons to fill at the pump?
