My father in law has a decent sized pasture in central tx and was wondering if this grass is worth bailing. Anyone know what it is?

Looks like Bahia to me. If so then yes, it is good for bailing.

Could be Bahia. Could also be Johnson Grass, but the seed pods make me lean toward Bahia.

The seeds don't really look like Bahia but I might be wrong.

Not Bahia... Bahia has a forked seed head like dallisgrass.

Not Bahia... Bahia has a forked seed head like dallisgrass. Do you see the forked seed pods in the right side of the photo? I figured he was talking about the entire pasture. Not that one weed in the center of the frame.

Good looking Bahia grass, though I'd yank that weed in the top left of photo!

It is Johnson grass. I have acres of it since it has taken over my fields. It will grow to 3 or 4 foot high and can be bailed but it doesn't make many bails per acre. I am having all of mine sprayed this year so I can start getting a reall grass crop. Also very hard to find someone to bail it.

Does the pasture have cow proof fences around it? You guys could go into the cow business!! Cows will eat it whatever it is.

You can graze Johnson grass most of the year but it does a toxic stage just after the first freeze of the year and can make cows sick. We graze it hard but pull the animals off in the fall.
