I'm a pretty fair diy'er. watched a few videos, who inspects their own water pump. Doesn't look like all that big a deal.

You can't imagine how many start changing the impeller but can`t finish. It is best to have someone help you with experience the first time. Good Luck

Mercs and yamahas are easier the the rest, be sure and do the whole kit, not just the impeller, and a dab of grease on the up tubes and in the impeller housing makes it easier.

I changed the water pump for the first time a couple weeks ago. It wasn't a big deal as long as you have all the grease, glue, and parts you need. The only part that I had a small issue with is the rubber gasket on the bottom of the water pump housing. When spinning the driveshaft and pushing down on the water pump housing to get the impeller to fit in the cup in the housing, the impeller touches that rubber gasket and pulls it out. I was able to get the impeller in the cup and then get the gasket back into place before pushing the housing all the way down. My recommendation for this is when you glue that rubber gasket into the housing, wait like 30 minutes for it to be really stuck in there before throwing it on. I used the specific glue and grease the service manual called for. Don't forget to grease the splines on the driveshaft!

I learned at the age of about 12 to change the impeller in the mercruise outdrive we had. That thing would eat impellers about three times a year, until dad figured out the PO had installed the pump housing 180 degrees from correct.

The only time I've had one done by anyone else was when I was sending my new boat to the dealer for PM, and now that the motor is out of warranty I'm doing the PM myself. I'll be attacking the impeller on my F70 in a couple weeks, it can't be as bad as dealing with the shifter rod on my old Johnson V-4 the first time.

Been doing mine own on Merc Black Max for 35 years. With exception of having some kind of lower unit work down. Had a Rude once and helped neighbor with Johnson. Not easy as Merc but not bad.

I have a 90hp Merc and it was a piece of cake to replace. It was my first time to ever do it and it took me about an hour.

It's easy just follow the steps and disconnect all needed parts before attempting to remove the lower unit.

Shouldn't be too bad, it's a merc 60 ct. So here's the real deal. I was just curious about if I should do a visual on the impeller. I had the motor idling in the backyard with the muffs on. I was in the yard maybe 20 ft away next thing I know a plastic repair couple on the hose gave way. I saw when it happened, lost all water to the motor. I ran for the boat and killed it. Total time without water was probably between 20-30 seconds. On subsequent running of the motor, I have a good strong healthy [censored] stream and no alarms or indication of overheat. I would think that it did "age" the impeller somewhat. Maybe I'm concerned about nothing?

should I just forget it?

Dude I'd swap it just for assurance that it won't fail later. Here's what it looks like when my little merc lost water. For less then a min.

I'd do a visual inspection just for peace of mind.

If your going that far just to look at it might as well replace it. Why buy the same ground twice?
