Went to Bob Sandlin yesterday looking for crappie but pattern for them had changed since prefishing. After getting beat down all day on crappie and watching diving guls and loons we decided to see what was under the birds for the last 30 minutes on the water. Was lots of fun catching some toad sand bass on crappie gear. No boat thumping necessary. Only redemption from an otherwise miserable and humbling day. Kept a few for some friends. TPWD says Sandlin is an excellent sand bass fishery and would have to agree.

Love that screen shot. Those fat sandbass must been some fun on crappie gear.

I have yet to find sandbass on that lake. It's not from lack of trying. You need to be trying Lake Tyler for crappie. It's fantastic.

Txmedic, they were a couple of hundred yards east of the rail road tracks out in open water. LOTS of gulls and loons out there to give them away. The weather was perfect with heavy cloud cover and the birds worked hard from probably 9:00 until we left at 2:00 although they were pushing shad up from there all the way to bank south of there from daylight on.

Still trying to figure out the crappie on Palestine but have a few friends that do well on crappie on Tyler that I need get out with.

I went to Tyler today and managed to bring home a limit of crappie. I probably caught 75-100 fish, but most were short. I fished countless brush piles and caught all my fish off of 3 of them. It was a solo trip so I was able to spend a lot of time looking around. I also managed about a dozen sandbass in the 14-16" range. I was using 3" tadpoles all day and was having to perform surgery on all the short fish to remove them.
