With highs in the 80s and lows in the upper 60's here in South Texas our water temperature is in spawning range high 50's and into 60s already. Will the males start making beds or is it more of a timing thing than water temperature.

The eggs have to be fully developed first. Males may be roaming, but females will have to be near by and ready before nest building begins. Don't know how far south you are, but I'd guess another 45+ days. Feb is a good time to start looking shallow south of San Antonio.

Like stated above the eggs have to have time to mature first. Also, crappie rely on length of day to spawn along with water temp. It's natures way to keep the crappie in check. Especially, here in Texas where the temps fluctuate a lot.

I found out that rule of thumb or past records are not always right. The spawn of 2016 was different than usual.I
caught 38 keeper male crappie and one female full of eggs on Feb. 19th in 1-3 ft of water.
All of the fish were big for Granger standards.... averaged 1.25 pounds at least.
In the past, the earliest was the 24th.
You got to at least give it a try if your going as much as I do when it gets close to those dates.
I also tend to see the bigger fish spawning first.
Just what I have witnessed.....

Just wandering if you remember the water temps then Kooby? I fish Granger, Travis, Buchanan, Canyon...the spawn seems to be very different depending on which lake. The science says that water temp is very important, and maybe that is more so for crappie than whites, but I have caught whites in the Yegua full of ripe eggs in early December when it was 10 degrees at first light. Some of the best fishing ever I might add. Granger has stumped me several times, just wandering what your opinion is on the matter as far as this particular lake is concerned.
"Ahhh, yes yes...who has time? Then again, if we never take time, then how can we ever have time?"

Every year people get on here and talk about it starting soon. South Texas my guess would be march, north Texas, April. We will get some cold weather again and they'll push deep. Don't rush it.

I usually start looking shallow around The end of February depending on weather. Their eggs may be big but they aren't ready yet. Not to mention another arctic front coming next week. We are still a solid 2 months away from any spawning.

H2o Temps were 56-57 that day Naggler. Went back the next few days and hardly found anything shallow. After that we had a lot of rain and lake levels fluctuated so much that the shallow bite was very bad. Could only catch females and few males on shallow b/p's close to spawning coves pretty much the rest of spawn period.
