All purpose flour on the leaves is supposed to slow them down, garlic spray may work.

For three years in a row they have eaten my 4 pear tree leaves completely off, but they keep coming back every spring and this year I finally got some pears. So you will be OK. You could spray with any bug spray that has neem in it. It's organic, add a little orange oil to it as it will stick to the leaves. There is another type of stuff out there called nolo, and it specifically targets grass hoppers, but it's a granule that you shake out over the ground. It will kill them and kill the future larva next year.

When I bought my place 16 years ago it had TONS of grasshoppers. My wife at the time was a big organic nut, so we used the NOLO bait. That stuff actually worked! It disolves their exo-skeleton so they die. Other grasshoppers eat the dead grasshoppers (who knew they were cannabilistic?) then they die as well, get eaten by the survivors, and so on and so on. It's the "gift that keeps on giving." I haven't put anything out since then and I'm still pretty much hopper-free.

Our place was covered in them too when we settled here. Mowing and clearing was the biggest help. I cut acres of tall grass that was not mine but adjoined and the birds did the rest.

I like to throw them as hard as I can into concrete. Make them suffer!
I know...morbid, but dang I work hard for my green plants!

Not an option for everyone but a few guineas will take care of the grasshoppers, ticks, bugs, and weed/grass seeds.

I remember back in the 60's, out in west Texas when the jumbo grasshoppers would march across the roads in certain areas by the thousands during their breeding season. There would be a huge greasy spot on the pavement where they were crossing. It always freaked me out thinking about how many there must have been in the area, especially towards Throckmorton and Lake Stamford.
