Bought a double oven to replace my old single oven. Had a question about wiring it up.

The incoming power has a black, white, and bare wire. The old oven had the black to black, red to white, and white to bare to bare. If that doesn't make sense I can add pictures.

Can I wire up the new oven this same way or should I get an electrician to run new wires from the breaker box.

Yes you can wire it up the same way, BUT wait a minute before you slide it in, Look at the name plate info. and see what the amp.s say it will pull, If you plan on useing both at the same time your wire may not be big enough, just my 2cents,

There is currently a 30 amp breaker installed.

Looked at the plate. Looks like if I have 120/240 it would require a 50 amp breaker but if its only 120/208 it only needs a 30 amp breaker. Based on that should I check my voltage next?

That doesn't sound right, Any chance you can post a picture of the name plate ? thinking it will still take a 50 amp with the 208 even,

Thanks for the help guys.

Just checked my voltage. I have 124 volts on the black and 124 on the white. Looks like I'll need the 50 amp breaker. Would this be as simple as replacing the breaker or would the wires need to be replaced as well?

I wouldn't put a 50 amp breaker on a # 10 wire if that is what you have now, Try it first and see if it will hold or not,

According to the specs in your pics, your oven is 7.4 KW @ 240V
So thats 7400 watts on 240V and it says you need a 40A or 50A breaker.
I'm not an electrician and all my info is only what I've picked up through the years.

Using the formula volts x amps = watts:
With your measured 124V per leg, you would be pulling 29.84A on your 30A breaker.
For standard calculation using 120V per leg it would pull 30.84A

That may or may not trip your breaker but you can try it and see.
When both elements are cycled "on" they will probably pull that rated 7.4KW

Lakeman is very correct about not just slapping a 50 amp breaker in there.
NEVER just change a breaker to a larger size without a qualified electrician checking out your wire size, length of run, type of installation, etc. That would be asking for a fire. In most cases, the wire size will need to be increased if you upsize your breaker. The breaker is protecting your wiring from getting too hot and starting a fire. The more amps you run through a given size wire the hotter it will get.

If you have to get an electrician involved, he's going to have to re-wire it all the way back to your breaker panel anyhow because the new appliances require a separate neutral which you don't have now. You can wire it up to function with your current wiring but a licensed electrician cannot do that as it would not be current code.

The current code requires 4 separate wires including ground. They call that 3 wire service because ground is assumed automatically. That will require the (2) 120V you have now + a separate insulated neutral which you do not have now + a separate ground which you do have. You are missing the dedicated neutral.

If it doesn't trip your 30 amp breaker, it's supposed to be safe. Older breakers can get weak and trip well below their rated load - especially if they've tripped often. If I was going to run it on a 30 AMP breaker, I would replace that old one with a new one to be certain it was in good shape. I've had old ones that were literally crumbling apart on the inside due to old age and running hot too long.
