I've seen a few older posts about these ponds but nothing since the floods. Was wondering if anyone has tried these out recently, specifically the one closest to the shooting range since it is easily accessible (Pond 1 in the maps). I read that this pond drys out every summer but decided to give it a try for a few casts this morning before work and had something hit hard and snap my line on the first throw. Was using a motor oil colored power worm so I'm hoping it was a bass and not carp... although I enjoy catching pretty much anything. Wanted to stay but had a meeting. I'm guessing the floods allowed some fish from the river to get trapped before it receded. Also wondering if the two ponds up the road (rectangular and the one just to the west of it: Ponds 2 & 3 in the maps) that border the golf course have any access points. I scouted a bit on my way home yesterday, but it was just a drive by and it looked like some boots are needed. Will try again this weekend. Any feedback is much appreciated!

Haven't fished pond 1 in a few years but I used to catch some out of there. You may have better luck going South on Luna to California Crossing. You can fish the river from the park and there are a couple ponds you can check out.

Ponds 2 and 3 have much better fishing. Pond 3 has some of the biggest crappie you would ever want to catch. In addition, a small inlet from the elm fork allows crappie, bass, cats, sandies, spots, gar, drum, carp, and even hybrids to escape the sometimes chocolate covered water of the river into more settled, gentle water. My PB black bass from pond #3 is 8 lbs even. Caught over the years, carloads of 2 lb plus crappie out of it, along with big strings of magnum sandies, some hefty spots, and even a few legal sized hybrids. Pond #2 has big bass, some big crappie, and some dandy catfish. You can park on the shoulder of Luna by the golf course and walk to pond 2, and follow levy dividing golf course and 2 to get to 3. They are kinda flooded right now, but if you can get in there, don't see why you couldn't catch a few.

There's the guy I wanted a response from! Thanks Rudy, good info! Despite the front that blew through last night, I might try to hit those up this afternoon. Will post pics/report.

One note of caution Haole7, Back in late october/early november, while driving along Riverside, by Campion Trails, I saw a rather large gator swimming across the river towards that inlet! I am not joking for one second. He lookd big, I figure 7-8 ft, maybe more. I tried to go back to get a pic, but the traffic was heavy and by the time i got to a place to turn around and go back, he was gone! Between pond 2 and the gun range pond, way back when i was in high school, my dad and I found a huge, mud hole created by a bull gator, complete with prints and mud tracks where his rather large tail dragged behind him going towards pond 3. That was way back in the early 70's, so they have been around since then although very reclusive.

Just a heads up, because the underbrush and weeds are bad back in there.

Tried out there this afternoon. It's a little tricky to get from the parking spot to the pond with all the mud. Caught several catfish and a LMB.

I've heard of several gator sightings along that creek lately with all the flooding. I'd def keep an eye out and use caution in the high grass areas. I've not seen anything were Ive been fishing in Las Colinas but it's been a while since I've fished that side of Las Colinas due to the flooding.

On a side note, what do you if confronted by one...other than run like hell! I carry but don't think it'd be looked kindly upon by the cops to respond to you shooting a gator while fishing.

gators are protected in this part of the state, but i know law enforcement has killed a few over the years around here, so not sure what to tell u about that.

Do NOT run in a straight line whatever you do! Gators are super fast, but they can not make cuts and turns and stay fast. So run in a large zig zag. This is no lie, when I was down in Southern Lousiana, the guys showed us what they were talking about, and it stood true.
