im curious to what rod reel and line set up yall use for channel cat? ive got some abu 5000 5500 and 6500 3 on Berkley cherry wood mh 7-0 rods, i have all the 5000 and 5500 spooled with 15 lb big game, the 6500 has 20 lb big game on it, what is your opinion of my set ups. when they are spawning on the rocks i use slip bobbers and danny king punch bait i use the 6500 for fishing off the bottom with checken liver and cut bait, i use surgiplast size 1 elastic mesh for the chicken liver on a 4/0 circle hook

For all my Channel applications just about, I get away with using a Garcia 5000-6000 series, Ugly Stik Lite Inshore M 7' (they don't make it anymore unfortunately) with 15-20# Offshore Angler mono. Slip corkin I can use this set up pretty effectively but I also like to use a spinning rod for slip corkin as well. If I did't already have the Ugly INS rods then I would prob just go grab a couple All Star M action in 7' or 7'6 from academy during rod riot. Would work well for Channels. Everything else Pro Angler.. Which the PA medium is probably a fairly effective purely Channel Cat rod, but I want something a little lighter and lower profile for that application, personally.

My fav is my Berkley Lightning Rod Shock Series 6.5' medium action with Mitchell 300 spinning reel and 35 lb Cabelas Rip cord braid. This little rig will handle cats from 6" on up. My other favs are Ugly Stick 7' casting with the Garcia black Max 2 bait casters with 14lb Cajun mono. For big fish I still use an ugly stick and an old Diawa Millionaire, 65lb braid. I have had for 40 years and still the best reel I own.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I don't fish for channels very often but when I do I pull out my old school outfits that I used when I use to fish for bass, 7' 6" bass pro shop rods with quantum 1310 MG reels with 15lb test, rod has a flexible tip and enough backbone to pull some channels out of timber, I also use a Berkeley lightning rod that is also good for the same thing, I don't bass fish anymore but I kept a couple of my outfits just for channel cats

I fish a light set up: spinning rod built from a 7wt fly rod spooled up with 8 lb test line. Basically a salmon/steelhead setup.

I use the same setup I use for everything. Ugly Stik medium/hvy, Abu 6500 and Big Game 30lb. You can catch everything from 1/2lb channels to 70lb blues and flatheads.
