I am thinking about getting a kayak for shallow water fishing. Anyone have any experience fishing out of one? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks

Get a sit on top yak. Much more comfortable. Catching crappie from a yak is a blast.

Oh yeah! You'll sometimes think to yourself you've been where no angler has been before. It's a blast.

Just put side scan on mine. It's on!

It's a Hummingbird 898 David. OMG peep

i would suggest sticking with a kayak designed for fishing. My buddy got one that was not, and started adding fishing accessories.... he just uses my girlfriends fishing kayak now .
+1 on a sit on top
You are probably pretty far away, but i have 2 fishing kayaks, happy to take someone out.
Don't expect great fishing tips ( I'm not that good, or seasoned as some on here) but it is always fun !

I have an Old Town Predator 13 and love crappie fishing out of it. Since I own a boat, I do not fish out of it as much as I could, but definitely take it up the creeks in winter and spring time. You can stealth right up on those crappie in the springtime.

I take 2 rods with me, and there are 100's of modifications you can do to kayaks...youtube has tons of resources on that. Before the Predator, I had an Ascend FS12 from Bass Pro, and it is a very good fishing machine too.

Sit on top yak is the way to go...I'd keep it no shorter than 12'...get as long a paddle as you can handle, and have a blast.

The Ascend fs12 is heavy and awkward but other than that it is very stable in the water allowing you to even stand up and cast , I have had mine since September and love it , the FS128 is even better and I have read that both have been improved in the latest model .

If Tommy has sidescan now, the crappie don't stand a chance. I've seen first hand the crappie that Tommy pulls out of Lavon. The man can flat out catch crappie in any weather!

Agree with all the above.
1.) Sit on top
2.) Get a model that allows you to stand and has elevated seat.
3.) Get a fishing model with built in rod holders and etc.. You can spend a fortune adding the needed accessories.
4.) I like the Feelfree kayaks that have the "wheel in the keel" feature. You can load the kayak and pull it down the ramp to launch. They are heavier but worth the conveniance of being able to pull it to the waters edge fully loaded.

Catching a fish from a kayak is a complete different feeling than anything else! Plus it is a good upper body workout!

Thanks for the information but keep it coming. Weight will not be an issue, I live on a lake so kayak will be kept in sling in boat house. Anyone have info on Hobie with pedals?

I have a Hobie Pro Angler and it's a great fishing kayak. I mainly fish for striper, but keep some crappie gear in there on every trip as well. The pedals allow you to have your hands mostly free to fish more, rig or re-tie while moving, use your legs instead of arms/shoulders, etc.

If you're thinking shallow spring fishing primarily, it can be a little tricky. Kayaks move very easily so you need to plan and gear for that. A stake-out pole or small anchor (or two) is all you need, but if you go without them, it can get annoying as heck pretty quick if the wind is above a whisper. A hand paddle is also handy to stop or adjust the yak orientation. I have a center console boat, but do about 95% of my fishing from the Hobie these days. It's just more fun to me.

I trailer my PA and launch at ramps mainly. They make carts for them if you want to go commando with your put-ins. Not a big deal either way. There's a lot of good info in the kayak section on here and a bunch of FB groups related to kayak fishing as well.

Talk to a dealer that knows kayaks well. Don't let him sell you the first one you see. Get all the info first and then decide. Sportsman's Best has a Kayak book out with lots of great info on starting to kayak.
Get all your gear right before you go so that WHEN you go in the water you are safe to recover. Oh yes sir...everyone I know has said it is not if but when you are going to fall out of your kayak. Have fun and be safe!
