How do you know when you need to shim your lower unit as you are rebuilding it with a new shaft?

You should always check the shimming, however most of the time when you are just replacing a propshaft or driveshaft it doesn't change the shimming. However in some of the late model Mercury motors changing a propshaft does require shimming.

You need a good factory service manual.

Tommy? what am I looking for when checking the shimming? back a forth play? I replaced the prop shaft 5 years back in the 150 hp Yamaha that I had and it was still running when I sold it, but I did nothing with the shims and it had a bit of back and forth play. Plus thank you for your input

Skeeter, Like I said when you replace the propshaft in your motor you did not need to check the shimming. The shimming process makes sure your gears mesh properly at the right depth. You will always have a little end play in the propshaft.
