I was at Fork today and saw literally hundreds of bluegill/sunfish on their circular beds in about 1-2' fow. They were in a long stretch of shade from some trees along the shoreline. I didn't see any further down the shore in the full sun. We can usually catch them off our dock throughout the warmer months of the year. Is thIs this a normal time for them to spawn?

Bluegill will usually spawn two to three times a year. Usually late March early April is the first spawn. Late August early September is the second. In some parts of the State they will have a third spawn in mid October. Side Note: I cleaned a bunch of Bluegill yesterday and a lot of em had eggs.

I tried for some gills yesterday and all I could catch was 2 pound drum. Fishing started out great this month on the lower Guadalupe and went down hill. Caught a 4" catfish yesterday, they are stripping the bait and not hooking up, little ones everywhere.
My personal best is still swimming out there just getting bigger. One of these days I will quit feeding it.

Bluegill spawning in October is highly irregular. So are bluegills spawning in September for that matter. Normally high water temps make a spawn in August not very feasible and since daylight tends to wane quickly starting in mid September, fall feeding patterns start about this time and not another round of spawning.

Last October we were catching Gills on the West Nueces River that had eggs in em. We even saw a few on nest. Also we found some on nest in the Comal River in October. The only thing I can say that would make em spawn that late is that both water bodies are spring fed with fixed temperature. Don't know for sure it's just an opinion. Side Note: Cleaned a bunch of Bluegill today that were caught on Dunlap and a lot of them had eggs.

Water temps have been falling with these little fronts. Saw 92 surface temp 2 weeks ago and 81 this weekend.

I have only been fishing for Sunfish for about three years and I am still learning their patterns. I have seen Bluegill/Sunfish on nest in the month of October during 2012. That year we had an extremely hot summer. Saw em on nest in the Salado Creek,Geronimo Creek, and Lake Mcqueeney. I have not seen this during the last couple of years 2013 and 2014. I have also cleaned some Bluegill this past weekend that I caught off of Lake LBJ and most of em had eggs. Looks like a September spawn to me. Just saying.

I bought a bunch of blue gill fingerlings from a fish farm a few years ago when I dug my pond. I put 40 lbs in. The guy at the farm told me they could spawn up to 5 times a year. I waited until I started seeing small fry before I started stocking it with bass.

Females having eggs and fishing being on nest is different from an actual, successful spawn. Sunfish females will create eggs as a rule once sexually mature and water temps and daylight duration are right, but will abort or absorb the eggs if conditions are not right or if they have spawned more times than their bodies can handle. Not only that, but sunfish fry that are hatched this late in the season tend to have a lesser chance to survive the colder months. After droughts, floods and other nature events that negatively effect the spawn, nature normally throws a lot of numbers for the next spawn, so maybe the late summer spawn will be that case for this spring, but from what I have seen that is the exception and not the rule.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm heading down there again on Friday. If they are still there I'll try to get some pics and check the water temp.

I caught some good coppernose gills on beds last week. In the river I fish it seems I can find sunfish on beds all summer
