I'm not new to braid but after some casting issues etc I have learned about mono backing and respooling the line tight every now and again to maximize it's use. I have some new braid to put on but don't know where to start figuring how much backing and how much braid to spool. Do you cast as far as you can, pull out another 10yards and count crank revolutions then do that many of the braid? I've got the largest size Plunger president which holds 260yards of 8lb and I'm going to be putting on 10lb power pro which was 4 or 6diameter equivalent. I'm assuming you want the braid further out on the spool as it probably casts better from the outside of the spool than deep in the throat. Any suggestions?

well, here's what we do. Just take about 3-4 feet of mono and tie to spool and then tie braid to mono and we good to go. the purpose of the mono is to prevent the braid from slipping on the spool. Good luck.

I would buy a spool of the cheapest mono you can find in 10# test, fill your reel up with that. Next take the end of the line and step of 50 yards. Cut the line there, roll it up, toss it and then splice your braid and spool it up. You will more than likely never make a 50 yard cast and most bass won't be able to spool you. This will save you money plus most spools of braid are 200 yards so you know how much line is left for you to use next time.

I just tie mono to the spool and wind enough mono on to cover the reel spool surface. Then tie on the braid and wind on however much it takes to fill the spool.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

This method applies the precise amount of mono, but you might want to do it in your back yard so the neighbors won't think you're goofy: * Depending upon how many yards are on your spool of braid, tie one end to the fence and lay it out into two or three equal parts. * Cut one of the halves (or thirds) off of the folded braid and wind it up onto your reel spool. (Use your portable drill to rewind the remainder of the braid onto the original plastic supply spool.) * Tie your mono to the braid that you just wound up onto your reel using a simple double overhand knot and trim the ends off. Wind up the mono onto your reel until the spool is as full as you like it. (You now have the exact amount of mono required, but the braid is on the inside!) * Tie the mono to the fence and lay all the line out. You may have to push a screwdriver into the ground to allow you to double the line back on your path. * When you get to the bottom of the reel spool cut the braid off, go to the opposite end of the line and tie the mono to the reel spool. * Wind up all the line. The braid will now be on top and you'll have a precisely filled spool.

Just put 50-75 yards of braid on top of your mono, or if using on a flipping rod just put 20 yards on top. No sense in filling the reel with braid.

REALLY ??? Is braid really that expensive? Buy it on sale at Academy. If you want to back a spool because you think the braid slips, put a few winds on there. How much ? whatever you want. this is one of those "C'MON MAN" moments. Unwind the braid spool in the yard and double/triple it up and "measure". Are you kidding or what ? You guys ARE really over thinking this ........ but hey, each to their own. Just be sure you are having FUN when you do it.

Just fill the reel with braid and be done with it. If your spool is slipping, cover it with the glossy electrical tape and the braid will hold. I would never intentionally add a failure point in the only link between me and the fish.

I buy the 300 yard spool of Diawa Samuari, 40 pound test, 60 yards per reel, that is ten bucks per reel, this year will be my third year without changing line, next year I will reverse the spool and maybe go another 3 years, pretty cheap when you do it like that.

I would never intentionally add a failure point in the only link between me and the fish. Thats why I put about 60-70 yards on there. It will never even come close to my mono backing. Then it starts fading and I swap it out at home. We're not fishing for tuna here, you don't need that much braid.

Exactly,,,,, wny add a failure point when you are looking for big bass & if your throwing braid, that is what you are going after. Nicely stated.
