Can't answer your question, but I heard today on the radio that manufactures are saying that new engines using a quart of oil every 1,000 miles is normal. WHAT? They claim it due to the "soft" rings that help increase fuel mileage. A quart is a lot of oil to use every 1,000 miles. Not really. You can put an awful lot of oil in for the price of an engine overhaul. Oil is cheap compared to every other service you might do. Yeah, but putting oil in is at the customer's expense. Repairing a bad engine should be at the manufacturer's expense. We are talking NEW engines, not 100,000 milers. This car we are talkng about has 140k miles on it. Hardly new. My comment was what I heard on the radio that manufacturers are saying a quart every 1000 miles is normal.

My comment was what I heard on the radio that manufacturers are saying a quart every 1000 miles is normal. I believe Toyotas spec is or at least used to be a quart per 600 miles. Anywho back to my car, fixed the hose and have been monitoring the oil level, seems to be using its normal amount again, picked up stuff to do a change on it and we will see how it goes. If it keeps using a bunch it will get walmart supertech oil as fast as it can drink it.

Learned something new yesterday... that makes me feel a little dumb.
A long time ago when I changed the transmission fluid on my truck for the first time I read in the book it said to go by the lowest reading on the dipstick... I thought it should be the same, but after filling it back up I pulled the dipstick and sure enough one side of the stick read about 1/4 inch higher than the other, I believe this is due to the dipstick being at an angle to the fluid level in the pan.
I have been checking my oil regularly lately because of the previous problem and found something. My dipstick has a piece of metal on the end with hashmarks on one side. If I check the oil with the hashmarks toward the front of the car it reads 2 notches fuller than if you turn it 180 degrees and face the hashmarks toward the back of the car. I did this about ten times and it came out the same every time... weird chit!

For anyone who cares fixing the crank case vent hose stopped the oil consumption/loss. 2,000 miles into a new oil change and still brimming full. Would have never thought that broke hose could loose a quart in a week, but its the only answer I have nothing else has changed.

For anyone who cares fixing the crank case vent hose stopped the oil consumption/loss. 2,000 miles into a new oil change and still brimming full. Would have never thought that broke hose could loose a quart in a week, but its the only answer I have nothing else has changed.
