Anyone know why they stop letting water out at the spillway when the lake is this high? I don't understand.

Bank fishing somerville is about to be a past time to me.... It just ain't worth it. If i had a boat/kayak it would make a world of difference. Too much work for too little when bank fishing the last couple of months... And I'm tired of fishing next to people at the spillway and getting hung every other cast. I'm frustrated with this lake and honestly about done with it until i can find a better way to fish it.

If you knew much about the lake youd understand how wonderful it is to have a full lake..in Aug. Most if not all regulars would agree we wish to keep lake high 2-3ft above during this time of year. Spillway is a waste of time, effort and tackle. Start learning the lake and bank accesses that produce.

Also, sent you a text.

Having a boat/kayak can be helpful, but it is not necessary to catch fish in this lake. From about late October through the end of March, bank fishing the creeks on the west side of the reservoir can be very productive. Back when I was going to A&M I used to make the drive to the spillway and fish that area as well. If they were releasing water I would almost always catch something. If the crowds ever got to be too much, I would just walk across the road to the intake side of the spillway and fish that area. Caught plenty of nice black bass out of there. Having a boat is great, but then you have to pay for it. wink

I've heard from several sources that there was an issue with the dam gates not being able to open up more than about a foot.

If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

In a world of compromise.....Some don't.

COE currently releasing 2031 cfs. That’s pretty much wide open. It’s definitely been strange how it was only open half way for a long time, then shut down, now wide open. I sure hope the gates will close when it gets back to normal levels

Good friend and I teamed up [Linked Image]
this AM for a Crappie beatdown. Bite was light-lots of missed hook ups. All came off brush 14-16FOW/minnows

Buddy is a Somerville Volunteer Firefighter. He received a call soon as we pulled out the lake; 14ft johnboat with 3 occupants capsized off welch. Let this be a heads up - when winds get above 12mph out if the SW the lake becomes NASTY.

Hey, I hear your pain there! try a kayak, yep a little money investment and alot easier on gas the bill! we launch in at upper end of the lake,
Nails creek state park. Because close to our farm, 10min away, we go early in am, fish on front point theres the drop off, with the creek channel there Yegua creek there is deep, at op level, 238, level there is over 12ft. on some spots, month ago found some nice crappie there, till idiot and kids on jet ski fly by, call GW, by then most are gone! We get a year permit, so no fees, just get permit when checking in. Also if your into cats there, on the same point we ran some throw lines, or. put out some short trot lines going into the lake, about 15 hooks or so, landed nice 14 lb channel just before 4th ofjuly, shocked me.....

Give that a try, I find less traffic on upper end of lake unless thats no convenient for you?

On the water levels of somerville this year, its all politics, yes the dam, and gate maintenance going on, but when the BS really starts flowing down the bravos, those mega homes near the Houston area down close the coast all flood because of the higher water flow on the bravos, if during a big rain event, corps will not drop somerville, and only ease it out!

Again, it too may be fake news.....

fish safe,,,,,,

Went on a crappie excursion this past Sun morning.

Left with 31. Crappie all came off brush in 8-12ft of water. Minnows over jigs.. jig bite is practically non existent..

Lake is dropping fast and what used to be under water is quickly showing. Stay focused when out on obstructions..

With this weekend holiday coming I’m taking week/weekend off the lake. A bunch of crazies will be out!

Is it worth fishing around Irwin bridge or Newman's bottom on foot during the summer for bass and crappie?

I paddled up Nails creek today. I started fishing at the first curve. Between the first curve and up to the next little cut about 1/8 mile upstream I caught 11 catfish and 7 small bass. I fished all the way past the flag pond cut about 1/2 mile and only caught one more small bass and one more catfish. I tried crappie fishing a few areas upstream of the flag pong cut but didn't get a bite. I worked my way downstream to the little cut and found small bass stacked in front of the cut. I caught them on almost every cast. I ended up catching another 15 to 20 small bass and a couple more catfish before calling it quits. In addition to all the small bass and catfish stacked in there it was full of gar. Lots of the fish I caught had scrapes an puncture wounds on them.

Nice J-Moe! I'm not going back to somerville again until they are in the creeks or I'm on a boat with Hoggwild

I went out to the main lake and bank fished this morning. There was a good amount of shad around but didn't see any signs of white bass or hybrids. There were lots and lots of little bass though. That's 2 years in a row that the Lake has had a great Largemouth bass spawn. I was catching them on almost every cast. Very close to the bank. I caught a couple of bluegill too. I'm not sure how many bluegill have moved shallow. The largemouth wouldn't let them close to the flies grin
