I'm in the process of setting up a swimbait rod. It's a 7'9" hf mojo bass. I'll be throwing mostly MattLure Bluegill, reflexion 5"swimbait and arigs. Probably going to be on a Lews speed spool 7:1. Don't have much of a choice on the real. What line do yall recommend? Big braid fan but fish clear water quite often. But then I have to worry about line capacity

Your going to want a 6:4.1 reel as most swimbait fishing is a slow presentation

I like 20# Seaguar InvisX

Ya I would prefer the 6:4.1 as well but I had an extra 7:1 laying around. I'll just have to slow way down. But thanks guys, I've heard a lot about Pline cxx. Anybody used it?

I use 20 lb cxx - no complaints. I also agree with the slower reel. With that thick of a line it's going to be hard to slow it down with a 7:1. Good luck & welcome to the Dark Side....

I've always used 25 lb Big Game. This is from a post earlier in the year. Makes a lot of sense regarding braid:

Many people use braid with swimbaits some of the best swimbait guys I know use braid. I'm just not one of them. Let me say this. 90% of the people who email me about losing baits are losing baits by casting them off. 90% of those castoffs are by and large with braid. My best explanation for this is while braid works great for traditional size lures (1oz or less). When you start heaving 2 + oz baits the braid tends to dig into the spool and when you go to cast you end up casting it off. Thats my theory on braid breakoffs. If your going to use braid use 65lb or larger to help remedy the line digging. I find that larger diameter braid doesn't dig as bad/much as the smaller diameter braids.

Flouro. I'm the biggest fan of flourocarbon there is and being a spotted bass guy here in Georgia I live and die by my flouro. I just do not like it for swimbaits. Again alot of people use them but flouro is known for sub par knot strength and lack of stretch. Just not good ingredients for big $$ baits. Again alot of people use fluorocarbon for big swimbaits. If your confident in your line with 2oz + baits than I say go for it and give it a shot.

What I use and recommend is good ole 25lb mono. is 25lb overkill. You bet. You don't need 25lb line to reel in any fish. You need the 25lb to be able to take the brunt of the load when casting 2oz + baits. The stretch helps and the strength of the line helps with the torque that your putting your knot through. I use Trik Fish camo line.

You can use big game or p line I just prefer the Trik Fish brand, Cheap and bullet proof and I kinda like the camo line concealment aspect of it just my perference.

Hope this helps. BTW Please thank your wife for me and send me some pics of what some big Texas Swimbait bass look like. Tyler Woods on this thread here is a stud with my baits as of late. :)~

15-20 pound P Line CXX and a 6:4:1 reel. 7 ft MH Ethos rod. You can go bigger and that's really a preference. In clear water I use clear 15-20# Big Game. I use the Gambler BigEZ swimbaits, Strike King Caffeine Shad and the Big Bite Cane Thumper. Not all work all of the time so experiment...

The California guys who throw big swimbaits commonly use 25# mono of their choice or 65# braid. (So do I, but I'm just a little guy compared to the big names I have had a chance to speak with in the big bait world.) They do this for better abrasion resistance and less breakage from shock-loads, not because the fish will break pristine line. I do not recall any of them saying they use FC. Mike Long is one of the best there is, and he says 25# mono works for him...

As for braid visibility vs. mono: Quite a few west coast clear water anglers say visible braid doesn't matter and hasn't affected their results. Remember, a fish can sense your fishing line with their lateral line whether a human eye can see it or not.

I like the hope of not losing a $100+ lure, but I'm sure it will happen. Some guys do go down to 20# mono of choice when fishing baits under 2 oz. so that the action isn't too muted.

If you start to get to any heavier baits (over 2 oz. generally), I'm betting that regular duty reel will get trashed in short order. There's a reason why the larger swimbait crowd uses heavy-duty round reels. A few heavy duty lower profile reels are beginning to answer the call, but Lews isn't one of them, nor is the Garcia Beast in my opinion. (That reel was looking nice until they forgot to provide an adequate spool for sufficient 25# mono.)

Absolutely ditto on the gear ratio comment. The #1 thing most anglers do wrong with swimbaits is fish too fast, myself included - it's just a human fault we have to work at correcting.

Thanks for all the tips they are greatly appreciated. Fished a little today with the reflexion, fantastic bait. I love the action. I had several follow it but no takers. I'll throw it a lot more once my rod gets back.

I use 20# Invisix on an 8' Dobyns heavy swimbait rod paired with a Revo Beast. I mostly throw 6" and 8" Bull Shads.
