I gotta get out there and catch some of these things. Gary Dobyns was telling me about these huge spots a few months back. Said 35 pound sacks are rather commonplace these days out West.

I'm curious how they get so big. All the spots I have caught in tx are tiny. Are their genetics different?

The California spots are the Alabama strain, which are thought to be a species of their own. The diet and lack of turbidity in the California lakes are perfect for growing these giants.

Hilarious that on his previous trip to that lake, he had his graphs on "simulator" mode and was frustrated he wasn't catching the fish he was graphing...that's good stuff.

I believe some of those lakes are virtually void of cover but do contain trout. Its a perfect recipe for toad spots. Very little or no competition

I like this part!

" Ferrante caught the big fish on a 6-foot, medium-heavy Quantam spinning rod that he bought while living at Lake Havasu in the mid-1980s. "The only thing I use it for is throwing grubs," he said. The remainder of his gear consisted of an old Pflueger spinning reel, 8-pound P-Line fluorocarbon line and a 1/8-ounce darter head."

Not getting many endorsement deals like that.
roflmao Well done!

SoCal, let's check your memory, you remember the state record caught out of Lake Perris by a teenager? Borrowed rod/reel and bargin bin spinnerbait... Good times back in the 80's
