The way I figure it, and this is just my humble opinion, is it is a combination of all those factors. The length of daylight seems to be the best indicator for me whether we are talking crappie fishing or deer hunting. However the difference comes that fish are more sensitive to temperature. The rut for deer will happen no matter how hot it is and when it is hotter than they are comfortable with they move at night. Crappies being cold blooded will wait until it is warm enough to spawn, thereby giving their offspring a better chance to survive in lower stress warm water. The moon affects everything on earth to some degree and more so the aquatic life. So yep I think it's all three factors in combination.

Like most all of Mother Natures living things I think that length of daylight is the first trigger for most creatures and plant life. With crappie, they hold on to their egg clutch until the water temp is right before they actually spawn. Fish are staging right now and can be found en mass in the right places. Don't mean they are ready to start the pre-spawn gorging. When the gorging starts and the fish get aggressive it gonna be Ketchn time fo sho. That water temp is gonna have to be a bunch warmer before that happens. I never paid much attention to moon phases even deer hunting. In short, two things. 1. daylight hours 2. water temp

what drives them in the spring ? water temps ? #2length of days ? #1the moon phase ? #3 this one I think has an effect on when the majority of the ones who have staged actually hit the bank to do their business, but in the overall scheme of the whole spawning season, i think it's the least important because I have caught them from march to may regardless of the moon phase. a combination of the above ? YESlets hear what the forum thinks on this subject I think all the above and rated by most to least on how much it affects when they spawn, see above added in red. My opinion anyway.

I could care less about when they actually lay the eggs. I just want to be there before the egg laying commences when they are eating everything in sight. Fish usually don't feed as well for a while after spawning until they have recovered from the rigors they go thru.

The spawn does what matter so much, but the feed that comes just before then. After the spawn it is very good as the female try's to eat all of the baby crappie. After that it is each fish as they spawn that is baitfish. Remember that a lot of the male fish crappie and shad for sure heads and sides turn black during this time. May be something to the moon phase because bream spawn of the full moon.

Ah they wait until they are surrounded by white bass so that if a jig comes by they can't get to it before ole whitey gets it. Especially those pretty ones you use ketchn...
