This may be a dumb question, but are there pure striped bass in Cedar Creek? I am a bit inexperienced here but I catch the heck out of whites, hybrids, and black bass (and others) on this reservoir - I see that this reservoir once had stripers - ie record is from 1975 (per TPWD website) - more importantly, if they aren't here anymore, why not? They seem to be going crazy on Texoma. I don't understand why they are successful at Texoma and not Cedar Creek (or anywhere else close for that matter). Rock on all...keep tryin...can't catch if you don't try.

They don't stock stripers here any more. Don't know why.

It is my understanding that the reason they do so good on Texoma is that it is the only lake they spawn in. They have to have running water to spawn and the Red River provides that. Texoma is a little salty also.

Texoma is one of the few lakes in the country that stripers actually spawn in. At least this is my understanding. It has to do with the salt content of the red river that feeds it. I am sure one of the Texoma guides could help us out understanding this better.

As for CC and stripers, no it doesnt have any. They did used to stock them but haven't in many years. I would guess that they stopped because they started putting hybrids in. The hybrids are better suited for the warm water temps we get during summer. They also put in walleye at one time. I wish we had some of those.

cool beans - thanks for the info - guess I will remove stripers from my cedar creek bucket list... keeping walleyes on though - saw they were stocked way back when as well - better story if someone catches one...

It is my understanding that Texoma and Twok are deeper lakes and can maintain a year around population but Cedar Creek isn't as deep.

On spawning in Texoma, I was told it had to do with the salinity in the red river being of the right amount to suspend the eggs in the water column as they float down river and develop, where most fresh water lakes have less salinity and the eggs sink and die. I'm sure there's a more in-depth explanation tho.

A biologist at the PK hatchery told me this:
Hybrids are a controlling tool for a lake. Too much shad is a bad thing which will deplete all of the nutrients. They stock hybrids to control the shad population. The reason for hybrids is they can stop the stockings and not worry about reproduction when shad numbers are low. They know the life expectancy of the hybrids and can let them die out when necessary. Stripers they cannot control as well. Also the hybrids have a better appetite to help with the shad.
