I was just reading some Louisiana Sportsman articles and they were calling Redears, Chinquapins. Anyone ever heard of this?

Sure have its a local name in Louisiana and a few parts of the panhandle in Florida.

Sure have its a local name in Louisiana and a few parts of the panhandle in Florida. Plus #1.They also call em Shell Crackers,Florida Bream,and Cherry Gills.

I have heard the name Shell Cracker a few times used for the Redear from locals who live on Mcqueeney,Dunlap,and Placid.

I've heard Chinquapin and Shellcracker quite a bit, Florida Bream and Cherry Gills is new to me though.

I wonder whats that name is reference to ? maybe the chestnut tree or possibly the oak ? interesting for sure

Yup, besides my Dad's half of the fam being from EasTex, I have an aunt and her fam that's from Louisiana. Heard, caught and cleaned quite a few "chinquapins". They also sometimes call them stump knockers. Might be a bit of origin there.

I have heard Florida Bream and Shell Crackers a lot. Pretty common terms in Texas and Florida.
