I watched a lot of the coverage last week of the classic and on more than one occasion I seen pros using culling beams where they would put the fish they just caught on one end of the beam then reach in the livewell and take out their smallest fish with FLOAT still attached and place on the other end of the cull beam.

My experience is these fish floats weigh a couple of ounces and when fishing that or any tournament that is a game of ounces how can they get and accurate cull with the FLOAT still attached?

Anyone else pick up on this and perhaps why they did it that way.

Ok. Just for kicks. I weighed one of my culling floats. It didn't register on the scale. It must have been less than a 1/4 ounce. It is just a small clip, some paracord, and a foam float. I'd guess that if the fish was that close, they'd remove the float and recheck. I think I did see the shot you are taking about though. And I thought the same thing. It seemed like a toss up. Either way. I guess cold wet weather dulls the senses a little. Lol.

They're pros. Maybe they have done it enough times to know how much the float impacts the beam? I wouldn't know. I'm just happy to put 5 fish in the livewell, and I rarely cull.

What is this "Culling" you speak of?

Could just hang a extra cull ring onone side of beam and leave it there. That would make everything the same.

I've used a culling beam quite a bit along with the floating cull rings. Those things are extremely light weight unless you have the kind with the weight dial on the floating ball. After a few fish, you get to where you can tell even with the cull ring in their mouths which fish is heavier.

Ken A, You are correct on the dial ones. My set has 6. When using the balance beam, we go ahead and put one on the fish just caught to balance them. Those still hold some water.

Interesting conversation for sure. I have wondered recently what it would be like if the classic was fished under the same rules as MLF, allowing the marshal to weigh and record every fish into a software program then the system picks the best 5 fish automatically or they step up and go total weight for the day kind of like back in the old days except the fish are released immediately and don't have to face the rigors of a weigh in stress.........

Defeats the purpose of large crowds at a weigh in and the Classic being an "event".

I say leave the MLF stuff in MLF. The Classic ain't broken. Its the Super Bowl of fishing. Lets leave it be.
