Going to start throwing jigs a lot more this year. I fish a lot of rock, standing timber, and banks. I figured a football jig would be a great asset to arsenal. Right now I use a 7' MH power inferno for most of my jigs. Do you guys throw more 1/2oz or 3/4oz football jigs? And you think this rod could fish it effectively? I have heavier rods but will use them primarily for swimbaits, frogs, alabama rig, and Carolina rig.

Ya I was trying to see if I could use my MH powell. A 1/2 oz wouldn't be a problem but I hear a lot of guys throw a 3/4oz most of the time

Very good rod. The most important thing when choosing a jig, or a rod for that matter, is weight. Weight of the jig and "weight" of the line used. The whole thing needs to be designed for the job at hand. No need for a heavy rod if you're using a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig. And you don't really need 20lb flourocarbon or 55 lb braid for those either. But, a 1/2 or 3/4-1 ounce jig is gonna make hamburger out of a medium rod and light line. Every rod had a sweet spot for lure weight and line weight. It's pretty important to match these as best you can.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

I like my 7ft heavy inferno and my 7'3 heavy Max for 3/4 football heads. The Max has some great sensitivity for bottom contact. The MH you have now might do it but if you're fishing deeper structure you need the extra power for that hookset. Most of the time a heavy Carolina rig rod works well too, so if you have one I might try that.

I tied on a 1/2oz football head with a trailer. Feels really good on the 7' MH powell. I don't fish much water over 20' yall think a 1/2 oz should be for depths under 20'?

3/4 oz most of the time. I want the jig to get down there where the fish are quickly and stay on the bottom. 7' to 7'3" MH fast tip is my rod of choice.

I throw the 3/4 oz on my 7' heavy and on my 7'3" heavy, but in the past I have thrown 1oz jigs on 7' mh rods. Just feels better on the heavy rods
