Due to cold rains and clear water, I think it's going to be late March on Central TX. lakes this year.

I think it will be late March everywhere. Lol. Maybe april at the rate we are getting late winter weather.
This is starting to get old.... I've been looking forward to march tournaments all winter. Now I'm scrambling trying to get additional cold weather gear. Lol

I'm thinking the same thing. I have a few trips planned for over spring break to fork and athens... May need to rethink those. Going to squaw Sunday, figured I can still catch a few in the warm water lakes

55 degree surface temps and first favorable moon phase and some fish will move up. Caught them last year in 51-53 degree surface temps off beds.

Spread those trips out across the entire spring - After all it is Texas.

Apparently I don't understand the "spawn". I am catching buck bass and big ol' females in 2-3 foot of water. I always thought that was spawning. And the dogwoods are blooming.

Bass worry more about time of year than water temp. They will be movie shallow soon if they aren't already. I would imagine that March 5th full moon will have some spawning, but for sure the April 4th full moon will set them off.

It's the Redbuds that mark the start of the spawn. Mine are a week or two from blooming.

Boy it really depends on your temp zone and water temp. Low night temp of 50 plus for 6-7 days usually will get it started. Water temp is the MAIN factor- not moon, not dates, not sun, etc...- those things may change water temp but the water temp is the driving thing- at least that is what I have found. Many things in nature like redbuds and bluebonnets correspond quite well. 62 degree afternoon water temp is a good thing if you are fishing a spawning pattern. learned that stuff from seasoned guides and reading many articles and it has proven true for me. I have some redbuds in my yard as well Chet and I am watching them too! I have some iris plants that seem to bloom during high spawn- I like those. But I never can predict it too well so like I said I spread my trips out and hope to hit a few right! Now you hear and I have seen them spawning in way less than 62- that is because they ALREADY started spawning when temp was higher and they are finishing- you see this a lot on the day of or after a front- they don't move up and start until temp is right. I believe there are some bass that spawn a little colder and some that spawn a little warmer, perhaps to help spawns have some fish that survive in extreme conditions. If a population of bass spawn for years in Texas, then the offspring may spawn preferentially in a slightly wider temperature range as a result- not sure. Fish come in waves as well- happens every year so the spawn is spread out over two months lots of times.
