Hi Guys, I am new to this forum and crappie fishing for that matter. Spent most of my time after catfish. My son is 8 and has just taken up an interest in fishing with his old man. That said I am going all in to get him on the water with me. So I thought we would try learning crappie fishing together as the action seems to be a bit more manageable for his taste. Got a few questions for the group though if you can pardon the "newbie" questions. I am sure they have been answered but could not find them searching.
I see folks using marker buoys. Are these necessary and exactly what point are you trying to mark? Is it the actual spot (brush pile I assume) you are over? Or is it just a general area letting others know?
Is there a particular piece of advice/equipment you would not be without? Rods and reels, rod holders aside.
We traded in our old boat for a new one. The last boat was set up solely for catfishing. This one we are looking to do a good job setting up for crappie as well. It is a 16 1/2 Lund. I moved the trolling motor from the past boat over and have DSI FF at the bow and the transom. I have bought a number of lake maps in hopes of being able to at least know where some spots are in case we have trouble finding some active brushpiles.
This forum has tons of information, so a big thank you to all who actively post. Hopefully in time I can contribute some wisdom as well.

Crappie fishing is great for the kids and you'll probably figure it all out pretty quick. Especially with the help of these guys. I'm sure just about anyone would love to offer some advise for anyone starting out to grow the sport. The fact that you are introducing your kiddo is a plus!
I'm not positive what everyone else uses marker bouys for but I'll throw one out when I locate a brushpile. It just gives you a good visual of where you need to keep the boat positioned to stay on top of the fish/structure. Once you are familiar with your spots, the bouy may not even be necessary.
I like fishing with an ultralight setup. Maybe a 7' light-medium light action (you'll know what you like just by feeling the action at the stores). I'll use 10-12' jig rods if I'm fishing shallower. Bobby Garland Jigs are good pretty much anywhere and anytime of the year. My go-to colors are Blue Thunder, Electric Chicken, and Blue grass but they're all good. 1/8oz jighead is pretty much what I always have tied on but I may go lighter when the water gets colder.
If you don't know where any nice brushpiles are, it will take some time idling the lakes but you will find em. Even easier, look for the bridges in the summer time and tie up. Use you electronics and however deep you see bait/fish that's how deep you need to be fishing. I would be jigging the creeks coming up in the springtime and fishing shallow. Less than 3' of water
I could talk about this all day but hopefully this'll help. Good luck!

I try to drop my markers as close to the brush pile as possible. It's hard to get it right on it but it gives you a reference point where to position your boat. There's lots of folks on this site that will help you figure out what you need. Being a catfish man I imagine all your gear is pretty much heavy duty. Crappie are on the other end of the spectrum as your equip will need to be light to ultra light. If I can help just shoot me a message.

Welcome. Marker buoys, I use them if it is windy and I have a spot that is good, depends. You need jigs that are different sizes to mimic the bait fish sizes, jig heads in different weights 1/32, 1/16, 1/8 that can drop down the depth that you want to fish (windy need more weight so you can feel the thump). I like to have road runners since those are good search lures and a bobber/float to slow it all down if they are cold or more difficult. Then just need some time on the water. Remember that the creeks warm up first northwest creeks are good to try out. I live on a North east creek and it works fine for me.

If I were you, I would search hard for Ernest Paty's Crappie 101 DVD. It will increase your knowledge of crappie fishing exponentially in an hour. No fluff, not trying to sell you anything, just straight forward tactics for catching crappie consistently. It is one of the best investments I made when I started.
