I've started figuring out how to rip chatter baits through grass, but have yet to figure out lipless crank ripping. I know a lot of it is in the set up. Anybody have a rod recommendation for this technique? I've read that glass rods work well for the chatter bait ripping, but does will these work for the lipless cranks? If so, recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Use Braid. Problem Solved! Mono and (yes) Fluoro do stretch. This prevents the baits from "ripping" free. It just puuuullllllls the grass out by the roots. Try a Med. Heavy long rod (7+) for better leverage and just use braid. Glass Rods do not tend have the backbone you need. BUT you do not want a Pool Cue stiff rod either. You need a little limber tip to help "give" when the fish strikes. We have been doing it for years on Rayburn.

Medium heavy with braid will work for both, but you have to temper your hook sets or you will miss allot of fish, Especially with lipless crank baits.
For me lipless crank baits is primarily about the speed of the reel either 6.2 to 1 or 7.0 to 1.

Dobyns Savvy SS 734C Long rod for good casts and a good backbone for ripping anything out of the grass.

I use a 7 ft med action rod paired up with 12-15 abrasx and I don't have any problems ripping a trap through the grass!

With the right action rod you can duplicate the braid effect in grass with fluorocarbons. Just depends on what you are comfortable with. I like a 7'3 Med/heavy with 20lb fluorocarbons.

I, also like the Dobyns 734rod for this application. Paired with a 7.0:1 reel does a GREAT job, also with ripping chatterbaits as well. Hope this helps.
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Thank you for the suggestions (keep them coming if you have them). John--are you talking about the Power Tackle Paragon? Not real familiar with that product line, so that's why I ask. Thanks!

Try one designed and named for the application.
Falcon Bucoo "Trap Caster"
I use 16 Sunline Sniper and can cast almost to my backing with a Lew's TS1HMB.
Plenty of backbone to rip, but soft enough tip to cast.

I use a Castaway grassmaster, Xheavy power with a moderate action. That rod will save your arms and back big time and still has enough give to not pull hooks out if you do your part. People think I'm nuts using xheavy but I don't lose fish including a lake Austin DD so who cares.
Also easy to get carried away with traps because they cast a mile, keeping the cast shorter than normal can really help.
+1 to BigRon above Rayburn is like trap ripping meca won't see too many with light tackle or glass rods out there.
