Academy has citgo 2 cycle oil for $12.99 per gallon. I normally buy quick silver for $20 per gallon.
Do any of yall use the citgo oil? Is it safe? And why is it so cheap?
Thnx

I say its all I use. I lied. I but whatever is on sale. I've used everything from Citgo, Pennzoil to some new brand I can't think of.

Thnx. I'm still wondering why it's 40% cheaper than other options.

Man I would call an outboard mechanic. Saving $7 isn't worth not making that call

Some on here claim they have good luck with less expensive oils. I'm not much of a gambler. Sometimes I feel I spend more in preventive maintenance then the repairs would cost.

I have a 300 HP HPDI and I fish about 3 days per week. So I spend a lot on oil...was gonna stock up on it, if it was safe to use but I have never used it or known anyone to use it

The gas we use does more damage than the lower price oil. just be sure it' TWC-3. I get mind at Walmart for around $13. My motor is almost 20 years old

Just spoke to my mechanic. He says not to use the citgo oil because after it goes through combustion it carbonates much quicker and heavier. He said it is asking for trouble. I'm a fisherman not a mechanic ...so I don't have a clue

Make sure you use the carbon cleaner in your fuel and your fine. Citgo owns refineries and specializes in making oil. Last time I checked there wasn't an outboard company that owns a refinery....just saying. Your mechanic is gonna tell you that cause that has been what they are trained to say. I have ran penzoil in my 250 pro xs for 8 years with no issues.

Topic has been debated pretty heavily. Plenty of folks out there using all sorts of oil in there optis with no solid evidence one works better than the other.
If you look at the mds sheets on the dfi oil, premium plus and the Citgo they are all actually manufactured by Citgo. It also shows there is a very small difference in additives between the dfi oil vs the others, the Citgo and premium plus are almost identical if I remember right.
When Mercury designed their engines they used the dfi oil so that's what it's tuned to run with But there has to be wiggle room built in to the tune due to variances in operating temps/conditions. In my mind the other stuff Isn't going to cause catastrophic failure. If you're a heavy use guy the saving may be worth the tiny bit of risk or even doubt that you're using the wrong oil. casual guy who will save $50.00 a year maybe not.
