I've seen a few guys on here posting their custom painted hardbaits. It's something I'd like to get into myself, just as a hobby when I'm not on the water. Couple things I need to know before I get into this.

1.) After finishing a lure, what do you guys use as a finishing coat, and how is it applied?

2.) How should I go about getting the blanks? I've found several places online but don't know which ones to trust.

3.) Can an old bait be taken down and repainted? If so, what's the best way to go about taking the old paint off without affecting the bait itself?

I know that's alot to go over but if someone would be willing to help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The most popular finish coat used it devcon 2 ton epoxy brushed on. I finish mine a few different ways though depending on the finish I'm after.

There are several good places to get blanks I have used predatorbass.com, Dinger custom baits, and Dakota lakes tackle and ha e been happy with everything I have bought. I would recommend doing small orders to start with to make sure your happy with the blanks your getting.

Yes factory paint jobs can be stripped and redone it is more time consuming, but a little less money out of pocket if you already have the baits. Also they are good to practice on.

Hope that helps you a little feel free to ask if you need more info I would gladly help you if I can.

Painting baits is a fun hobby, and very addictive. I also use Dakota lakes tackle to buy my blanks, you can get the two part epoxy like brad said, once u get the hang of it you might want to try to dip them, its a better smooth finish in my opinion but the two part epoxy works good too. I use KBS coatings to dip them. Watch lots of youtube videos, that's how I learned most everything. as far as painting over a old paint job you can just skuff up the paint with sandpaper and start with a white base coat. If you have any questions feel free to message me

devon 2 works great and is easy to use. dont know where you're located but here locally elliots hardware at coit and park carries it. otherwise you can get it on ebay. make sure you get the 30 minute type. realistically you'll have about 12-15 minutes of working time before it starts to get sticky.
brad's suggestion to buy a few from several places is a good one. id get the same blanks from each place so you can compare.
refinishing old lures is a great way to start. youll be amazed how you can bring an old lure back from the dead. these are a few from my junk collection. most are lures ive found that were in really poor shape.
lots of good info on the forum and people who can help you. good luck and post some pics when you get going.

Really appreciate the replies guys. Another question I have is, when you get the blanks, do you prime them or just paint directly on the blank?

I usually always start off white a white coat, that's called your base coat. then go from there. If you want more of a translucent bait then don't paint a base coat.

the only time i dont do a white base coat is if im working on a ghost pattern. like the name implies, colors are very light and are meant to be seen through. examples of ghost baits.

Thanks for all the help basscatdad, really appreciate it. Awesome job on the baits as well, both of you. That ghost pattern with the crawfish looking shell in your last post is killer!
