If a man was going to go into this type of business. What would be the brand name that would help make it more successful and why?

Just an FYI, and I know this is the same as bait and powerboat companies, but there are a few brands that fall under a parent company.

Johnson Outdoors:
Ocean Kayak, Necky Kayaks, and Old Town Canoes
Carlisle Paddles
Extrasport PFD
Humminbird, MinnKota, & Cannon (among other interest)

Confluence Outdoors:
Wilderness Systems Kayaks, Perception Kayaks, Wave sport Kayaks, Dagger Kayaks, Mad River Canoe, and Boardwork SUPs
AT paddles
Harmony and Bomber Gear

Legacy Paddlesports:
Native Watercraft Kayaks, Liquid Logic Kayaks, and Heritage Kayaks

Some independents are:
Jackson, Malibu, Diablo, Nucanoe, FeelFree, and Hobie (well they make all kinds of stuff really) to name a few.

There are some paddle companies as well with multiple labels:
Accent and Cannon
Bending Branches and Aqua-Bound

Werner paddles is on their own, I think.

Just passing along the info if you haven't already looked into any of this.

Depending on where you are will determine who you can get. Companies don't just arbitrarily set up distribution.

Nearest dealership of any band of kayak is 150 miles. I called hobie and have their blessing to open up a store. I just wanted to get more input. I think hobie is the best kayak you can get but also the most expensive. Not trying to put down anyone but in my area not too many people know what hobie kayak is. So I'm not sure they would even spend that kinda money on a kayak and I surely don't want to sell pelican.

The bigger questions are whether you have any experience or training in starting and running a retail business? Will it be for primary or secondary income? Do you have a staff and store location in mind? I expect there will be seasonality in sales, can you handle that?

I have a little experience and I'm learning. From what I've seen the number one rule is don't go spend money you don't have to impress others. This would be secondary income, I'm trying to establish what I plan on doing after retirement. The area I plan to building on is near city park which has a river run thru it about 4 miles long. The whole area is getting a make over due to grocery store coming into town. New RV park will be across the street. The city is in pro business mode right now. Mainly because the community out cry that there is nothing for our kids to do in this town.

Don't forget liability insurance if you open a kayak rental business.

I'd go with Ocean kayaks and Old Town canoes.
They've been around longer than most other brands and are recognizeable with time proven products which are pretty much bombproof.
They also won't break the bank!

Just one more cast!

If you haven't done so yet, a business plan just to validate it has the potential for a business is your first step. Associated start up costs, expected revenue/expenses, buying demographics of area, inventory, available capital, cash flow, service/warranty work, etc. Your choice of kayaks may very well be driven by expected margin on various brands - they may all be close but you don't know until you know and this is a major component of your business plan. The rental side is a different business than retail and takes a different type of effort. Not sure what you mean by secondary income - income beyond current investment income?

I think the question of "what city?" was more directed towards helping you select the brand/type of yak. I'm guessing you're in one of the drier parts of Texas. If your city river or local lakes are not conducive to a Hobie pedal yak (shallow, limited access, etc), then Hobie is prob a bad choice. OTOH, if your river is deep and slow moving, then whitewater yaks would not be a good choice. You don't have to say where you are planning this - just that I think people were asking so they could help.

Another option may be to approach existing successful businesses that may be interested in setting up a satellite operation. You basically become a general manager of that business and less of an owner but you also distribute some of the risks to the mother company (and of course, they take some of the success in return for the risk). Of course, the mother company has to have faith you have enough experience and motivation to run a shop under their umbrella. GL - without dreams, success seldom happens!

This is spot on! I've built and sold three business in the behavioral healthcare industry, and I'm a small business owner currently (secondary income to my faculty job). Developing a business plan will force you to think about aspects of creating a viable business that don't jump out at us all, and it will help you figure out what questions you have answers to and which ones you need to go get answers to from people that know things. I don't know if you plan to seek a small business loan, but a business plan that is coherent and viable is essential for those purposes too. Even community grants from municipalities require one.

If you haven't already developed, the Small Business Administration provides an excellent template on their website for inputting information and then developing a very professional-looking one. I've used it myself for a community clinic I helped develop here in Marshall - the Community Care Center - and found it addressed all the required parts. For me, it most importantly required me to develop a startup budget and to assess viability for turning a profit right from the get-go.

If you're interested, here's the link for getting started:

https://www.sba.gov/tools/business-plan/1

PS: I've actually thought a lot of starting a "secondary income" yak/outdoor store here in East Texas. I don't know your plan on location, but kudos on following your dream. I haven't been able to muster up the courage to do it - or to tell my wife for fear for my life... smile

Over the years, I have known several people who have had the same idea.

They were wise and worked in the business for a while and quickly discovered that it was a lot more stressful, complicated, difficult, and time consuming than they expected.

The mortality rate of water sports businesses is very high. Plan your venture very carefully.
