This a kayak but not a fishing question, but I figure this is a good place to start. My wife has been wanting a kayak, not for fishing, but just general recreation. I've tried researching , but my head is about to explode. She will be using it by herself, wants a sit on top type and may have the two yorkies on board with her. Where is a good starting place around %500 give or take for a decent quality yak. I don't want to break the bank, but I'm not impressed with the Academy versions either. Anything to particularly stay away from? Any help is appreciated.

I see you are from Austin and probably not going to make the trek to North Texas to buy a kayak. I would look into some of the Ocean Kayak models. They have some very affordable boats that sound like would be a good fit. Hope this helps. Happy paddling!

This OK Tetra 10 could suit the bill for her. Or this one: OK Venus

You can pick up the phone and call them. Even from Austin they are more than willing to help.

Kill a little time and save yourself the stress. Around mid April, your local kayak dealer holds a demo on Quarry lake (braker/MoPac). There's dozens of kayaks to try for free so bring your wife and dogs. Doing a on the water comparison is the ONLY way to go. BTW- its free, just show up, sign a release and choose your boat

Since you are in Austin, I would second Austin kayak, they also have a discount for members of the Texas Kayak Fisherman forum.

my wife has a Tarpon 100, and absolutely loves it. I use it as a buddy kayak, and it works great for that too.

If she wants to bring her doggies, SOT may not be the best choice. Something like a Jackson kilroy or native ultimate might be a better choice. They are deeper and easier to keep the doggies inside.

You are lucky because you live in Austin and there is more than one kayak shop in your area. I would take her to Austin Canoe and Kayak. They are great people to deal with and super friendly and know their stuff. T&G is also there but I've never been there but have heard goo things about them as well. ACK has a shop in San Marcos and now in San Antonio which is great and those guys bend over backwards for you. Take her to ACK demo day coming up, you can't go wrong. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...ng#Post10632580

There is a pretty wide price span even between kayaks in the 10-11 ft length. What does spending moe money buy you? Is it better or more durable construction, extras like handle, tie-downs, storage, hatches, etc.?
