Why is my tach pegged with out starting the motor?

Does it return to 0 when the key is activated,mine done that since new ,its never been a problem,could be some bleed over voltage coming from a faulty diode in the rectifier

Wire connections on the tach. Check for ign post getting 12v when key is turned on. Should go to 0rpm when key is switched on. Tach could be bad. If you are in my area I have a test tach.
