Ok, forgive a new old amateur fisherman but, there are so many choices it seems in fishing line to use.
Mono ???
Flourocarbon??
Braid??
??? am sure there are more

I don't really understand when each is used. I am NOT going even to get into another posters question of line diameter. LOL, way over my head.

Is there a 'simple' solution of which one to use and for what baits?
Lord, I sure hope so..
Anyone????

God Bless

Honestly I use mono for pretty much everything. It just works and isn't a hassle. But here's some pointers. If you want to feel everything that goes on (shakey heads, drop shot, t rigs, etc) use braid, and use a flourocarbon leader for clear water. Flourocarbon is good for clear water and it sinks which can be good. But flouro is a pain almost all the time, it's expensive and you have to replace and retie it frequently. I dunno, lots of guys use others with really good results but I keep coming back to mono just so I can focus on fishing and not screwing with my gear.

I use flurocarbon for everything except top water, I use mono for top water cause it floats, fluro sinks

Same as above. Will also use braid for frogs or throwing anything in thick stuff

+1 and I use braid for flipping because of its strength

You can't really just use one line for everything if you want to maximize your presentation. Certain lures respond better with different lines. I use braid with flouro leader for bottom contact baits, flouro for crankbaits, mono for topwater, copoly for moving baits. I also use flouro for pitching/flipping, sometimes braid for topwater/crankbaits. There really is no 100% right or wrong, just some lures work better with different line.

I am not a finesse fisherman. So I go big or go home without the big fish.

- 25 lb. Stren Mono. on top waters.
- 25 lb. XPS Floro. pitching in heavy cover, square bills and spinner baits.
- 17 lb. Stren Floro. for C-Rig and Cranking open water.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.

I use florocarbon for just about everything. The more I spend on it the more I'm finding things that mono can get me by just fine on! But I really like floro for getting my jerkbaits/cranks down deeper and anytime I'm throwing a jig where I really like the sensitivity. So I used to throw floro on my squarebills but this is one example where I can replace it with about 15lb mono.

I also don't like floro on topwaters because it causes the bait to sink just enough to where it hinders the action. Mainly like when I throw a spook on floro it floats for the first couple twitches then stays underwater the rest of the way back. Some people say this is good but I haven't built up the confidence for this yet.

Lee, I'm on my last spool of flouro. I've tried several different brands, knots, wetting the knot but I still keep losing fish and lures from line breakage and yes I retie often. It's disheartening to make a cast and watch you lure fly out to the wild blue yonder because the line broke. Anyway, I know flouro has some good qualities and lots of people do well with it. Bottom line is, I just don't have confidence in it. I'm gonna dance with the one that brought me and stay with mono.

From my experience...

Braid - expensive but strong and sensitive due to no stretch. Downside it cuts into cover like a knife, great for grass bad for timber/reeds. Obviously more visible than mono/fluoro.

Fluoro - expensive but more dense and less stretch (No stretch is a myth) for slightly better sensitivity and sinks faster than mono. Has no effect on crankbait depth, line diameter (resistance cutting through the water) is more of a factor. Kill a crank at it's max diving depth then try to pull it straight up, that's a lot of resistance .010 of floating mono isn't going to have an effect. At rest fluoro will help a suspending bait stay level (bill is out of the equation). Downside is knot strength and abrasion resistance, it's dense if it gets a nick it's going to break more easily than braid or mono. Visibilty can be debated all day I fish Belton which is crystal clear in most parts. My buddy uses strictly fluoro I use mostly mono some days he catches more some days I do fishing the same baits same techniques. He definitely breaks off more though.

Mono - strong and cheap does most everything well. The stronger and less stretch the more sensitive but the payoff is stiffness and harder to handle.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to fluoro for jerkbaits, braid for grass and mono for everything else.

Just my .02 no refunds.

Braid, mono, McCoys Mean Green Copoly float
Fluoro, Pline copoly sink

You ask for a simple solution, and the simplest (not perfect solution) would be to use McCoys Mean Green for everything. Is it the best solution for everything? No, but it has low visibility, low memory, low stretch (but some), good abrasion resistance, and it floats.

Simple solution:
30lb McCoys for frogs and punching
20lb McCoys for crig/trig
15lb for topwaters, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, swim jigs
10lb for dropshot/shaky/wacky/other finesse presentations

Everyone has their preferences, and mine change (for a while I didn't use mono at all, but I'm finding that it works best on a few jerkbaits that I like)
My preference
65lb braid for frogs/punching/a rig
20lb braid to 10foot leader of 15lb fluoro for trig, open water jigs, spinnerbaits, bladed swim jigs
20lb braid to 10foot leader of 15lb McCoys for Crig
20lb braid to 10foot leader of 12lb McCoys for crankbaits/topwaters/spoons/blades
20lb braid to 10foot leader of 10lb mono for some jerkbaits
20lb braid to 10foot leader of 10lb fluoro for other jerkbaits/drop shot/shaky/wacky/donkey rigs

Unless you just want to learn all that ish and have tape labels on your 22 outfits... Just spool up everything with green 15 lb big game or McCoys and call it good
