Has anyone heard any reports on crappie espcially around the mason point area or 99, went too both places a few weeks back but were skunked we were fishing from the banks with jigs. Was thinking about using my kayak to fish the banks but just knowing their are some huge gators swimming around especially at mason's point area gets the blood pumping!!!!!

I know I would NOT be in a kayak during alligator mating season!

This was several years back, but my brother and I were fishing near the Mason Point launch for bass out of his bass boat, about 100 yards from the launch near the bank where the tree tops were sticking out of the water, and we had just seen a huge gator which looked to be as long as our boat. It was headed out away from the bank and going into open water.
Just a few minutes after the sighting we go around a bush and here is a guy in a float tube fishing in between the brush. We told him about the gator and continued on down the bank not paying attention to the guy and it seemed like maybe three or four minutes I turned to look back at the guy and I saw him walking up the ramp in a hurry with his waders and tube around his waste.
The guy covered what had to of been 100 yards in record time. I didn't time it, but it couldn't have been more than five minutes after I mentioned the gator to him. roflmao
I think the kayak wouldn't be a problem as long as you move slowly and don't make splashes with the paddle. Move slow and easy with purpose, and don't appear to be struggling. Also gators are territorial so keep an eye out for a big bull and stay clear.
I kayak in the Nueces and it's got some huge gators also and there is never a problem, and most of the time I kayak there the temperature is still pretty cold and they are denned up. Choke is different as the water is deeper and probably not effected by the cold as much, once it warms up. Usually I look for the snakes. If I see the snakes, it's warm enough for the gators.
I haven't heard any reports on the crappie, but I think it's still just a little early

Stay a long way from mama's with babies too. Had one trying to jump in the back of my buddies 21' bass boat, I think he had change pants after that. There are two that I know of and saw with my own eyes that go about 18+ feet. One was eating a deer that came to the edge for a drink of water, gator snagged her right off the bank. Will never forget the size of that gator. I have a 20' boat and I've had them come up beside me with a hungry look in their eye's. I puckered up and moved on in a hurry. The people I don't understand will sit chest high in the water while they fish off the rocks at Calliham boat ramp. Saw this more than once. Be careful.

Thanks for the advice fellas, I think I'll just stick to bank fishing for crappie!!! I believe the sizes I've seen at least a 16ft about two yrs ago at 99bridge.

If a gator can snatch a deer off the bank it's got some quickness.
If I were to bet on which was quicker, the human or the deer, my money would be on the deer!
Just sayin!

I really want to comment but I'll be banned for calling you several names. Try that during mating season and see how it goes for you.

Walks up that close to gator, makes mistake and gets attacked. Then everyone is up in arms wanting the evil gators killed... Leave them alone and stay away from them, and they will leave you alone. And don't feed them.

That was in the middle of mating season if I remember correctly. I bet it's 1000 to 1 drowning to gator attacks on south texas lakes. Wear your life jacket and don't worry about those big lizzards. If they are there then it's usually a good fishing spot in my experience.

You almost had it right!

At that moment he entered his space, that gator isn't concerned about statistics because he's looking at that guy as an easy meal.
C'mon, the dudes standing directly in front of the gator in the perfect position for the gator to launch toward him. He's standing on loose gravel wearing flip flops! That gator lunges and the dude reacts and his little flip flops go out from under him and the gator is right on top of him with that massive vise of teeth!....How dumb can a person be?
