Well, I just bought a 98' Charger that has a 98' Ymaha VMAX 150 on the back and the steering is near completely gone. It has hydraulic steering, and the issue is is that the steering is super loose. I can push the motor side to side with one finger all the way to each side, when I turn the steering wheel, the motor moves about an inch every 4 rotations in the steering wheel. The steering wheel is in no way tight at all, I can spin it hard and it will keep going for a few turns. Now with that said, I have not noticed any kind of leakage, but I have not really got down to checking for leaks that could be hidden. The steering bar on the motor is a coated a bit in fluid whoch could be part of this issue. Where should I begin? How should I begin? What do you think is the issue?

To start with the system has a bunch of air in it, probably due to leaking seals which is a common problem. I would get some fluid and bleed the system and check where your leak is, then fix and re-bleed.

Ricky, get a rebuild kit for your steering and install. If you have problems with it give me a pm and I will help you fix it. Ebay has kits the cheapest so find out which you need and order one. If it's leaking I guarantee you it needs to be rebuilt.

The issue is that very few boat owners or their mechanics check the hydraulic steering oil level. Pay attention to any leaks and get it fixed. Good Luck
