Was able to land a reservation last Saturday on Squaw Creek. Never been there and have been wanting to go for a long time. I studied Bill Wilcox's Honey Hole episodes on Squaw from last year - one from about this time of year. He was catching them on that simple Berkley Power Worm in Junebug or dark purple - I was out of any of those and told myself, just stop on the way and pick some up. Well, being too anxious to get there, I thought, Naw, they'll bite on the stuff I have. Not so, at least for me. I must have passed 10 Walmarts on the way. For those of you that haven't been there, it's like a mini-Fork - lots of timber but not lots of grass (I never found any matter of fact). Lots of Talapia and you have to keep those - can't throw those back. Anyhow, first cove out from the boat ramp I watched a father and his son land several nice ones (one maybe 6 lbs) and when I chatted with them he said "Only able to catch them on these 10 inch black or purple Berkely Power Worms". KaaaRappppp! Why didn't I stop at a Wally World! Anyhow, ran across some other bank fisherman and they were discussing that watermelon red (which I have lots of) wasn't working - that only black worms were working for them! By the end of the day I only caught one on a wacky rigged Yum dinger. Was a beautiful day though - 81 degrees, hardly no wind. Spawn appears to have happened or was over, saw lots of fry. Needless to say, my tackle box is now updated with 4 bags of black grape and junebug power worms. I mean you oughta treat a purple worm like a good pair of underwear - never leave home without them!

These youngsters have teased me for years by asking if I have any "purple or motoroil colored worms"!
I guess I should be glad that I kept those in my worm bag in case I get an opportunity to fish Squaw Creek!
Great report (sorta)! Thanks for the info!

Do you have to have a reservation to kayak fish, or is it just for actual boats?

Good post. Sorry it didn't go as you planned, or did plan but didn't plan ahead, or whatever. Sounds like a neat place to fish, though. Was it too crowded with boats to be in a yak (I have no idea how big it is and if they would let enough boats in to make it crowded).

I believe they cut it off at 100 boats (and our kayaks count as a boat - so you have to pay the same $30 gate fee as a power boat). The reservoir is probably oh maybe twice as large as Welsh with lots of coves to get out of the wind. But lots of them would probably be a long paddle since there is only one place to launch, and that's at the boat ramp located on the North side opposite the plant. So I thought 100 boats (I was # 103 so there were some cancellations that let me get a reservation) would hardly be noticeable. Wasn't the case because there was a big tournament going on and lots of running up and down the lake. So had to share space quite a bit. I'll bet if you were able to go on a Friday or Sunday (only open to boats and yaks on Fri - Sun) then it might be more calm. Nevertheless, there is good fishing right out of the ramp area - those three coves to the NW. And it all looks tremendous, especially if you enjoy fishing timber. Maybe there is some grass in the lake, but not where I was fishing. I would like to go back in my buddy's Power Boat to explore the entire lake. Just be sure to bring those stinkin' power worms! Now Bill Wilcox claims that post spawn, come late March - April that the top water bite there is tremendous. That would be fun!

Sorry to hear about the slow fishing Ben. IMO black or black grape power worms are one of the 5-6 lures I should always have on the boat...
