I grew up on Canyon lake but I was more of a bass fisherman back then and never paid much attention to whites/stripers

Is there enough striper in the lake to legitimately target them? I've never seen a person out there fishing specifically for them, I know there used to be a few guys 10+ years ago.

I didn't grow up on Canyon, but I fished it since the early 70's and as far as I can remember there isn't a large number of stripers or people who target them spcifically, at least to my knowledge. Most of the guides from years back quit Canyon and moved to Lake Buchanan.
Usually around April and May the stripers come up right at daybreak and feed on schools of shad on the surface. I used to try and get out on the water near the Island by the dam and listen for the commotion they made when they started busting the surface. Using a trolling motor I would chase after them until they were coming up around the boat. It was a frenzy and any topwater plug that was heavy enough to cast out and get distance would work. These are fast moving schools and they can be hard to stay up with.
There used to be a couple of guys that guided out of Universal City that targeted them as you said, several years back.
I know Cliff Hill of Hillcounty Guide Service guides part time out on Canyon, and other area lakes, and he targets anything you want to catch, and he produces impressive catches consistently. If anyone would know it would be him. He's a member on this forum but I haven't seen a recent post from him.
I would say do a search for Hillbigcountry, but I can never get the search feature to work on this forum, (never have) and send him a PM. Heck of a nice guy and he will give you all the accurate info you need.

I was fishing the other day for crappie at canyon and caught 6 or 8 little stripers from 14"-18".

never caught more than one or two at a time which makes me think there might be some bigger ones in there or at least a population on the upswing. I've never caught 6 or 8 largemouth in a day out of that lake.

Might be from a recent stocking. There just isn't enough forage in that lake to support a large population.
It baffles me why they continue over the years to stock stripers when it would seem that stocking Hybrids would make more sense.
There is even a consumption warning on the stripers because of mercury content in the larger fish.
The stocking history says they've never stocked hybrids, but I caught one back in the mid seventies up the river that looked like a football and weighed about 5#, so I'll argue that anyday about them not stocking hybrids.
All the stripers even today that you catch are lean and look malnurished, simply because there isn't enough forage. Compare the lake stripers to the ones that have been caught in the river below the dam that have a steady diet of rainbow trout and you'll see what I mean.
Oh well, I don't think it will change since it's been so many years already and they continue with the stockings.
Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with it, when it is better than not stocking anything at all, only that it really doesn't make sense to stock stripers when I believe the hybrids would do much better. JMHO

Txtrophy - we are having a Texas Striper Association Tournament this coming Saturday on Canyon Lake. Great bunch of guys and the tournaments are always fun.

I personally think Canyon is a pretty good Striper lake. Been pretty good to me over the last 3 years. My team has caught two Stripers over 18 pounds in 2 of the 3 tournaments that I have fished on that lake and we are by no means experts, just very lucky.

You should come join us this weekend.

I learn something new every day.

Why do you think hybrids would do better than stripers in canyon?

I'm a bit biased because I like to eat fish! They warn of mercury in the stripers and it's a fact the bigger one's are probably not very good table fare.
Hybrids as do the stripers school with the white bass and would probably be easier to locate without targeting them specifically.
I've caught stripers up river while fishing for whites, but they aren't that prolific, and when you do hook one, you usually don't land it because you aren't prepared using ultralight tackle with stumps, rocks and stickups around, you are lucky if you land one.
Other than that it's just my opinion and I'm probably way off track.
