ive been fishing for bullreds in freeport, texas city dikes aswell as east jetties with little luck is there certain types of weather or temps i should look out for? i have heard that shad are the way to go but the same has been said for live mullet now ive seen 30+ inchers hit in the canels inland so i know they are there. i guess my question is is there any other bait that has sucess or any other setups besides the standard redfish rig i should be using....... i mean the bullreds haunt my dreams i got to get one smile

if i was looking for reds i'd use a 1/2 crab around the rocks in as deep water as i could find.

I agree with smooth move on using crab. Right after a cold front, fish will seek out deeper water and hug the bottom where it's warmest. However, as it begins to warm up, they'll transition to shallower areas and then move into the shallows during the warmest times between fronts

As far as a rig goes I would just pick up a red fish rig and learn how to make it. usually you will get hung up on the rocks so bring extra tackle.

Crab works but little fish sometimes pick them clean. For me if you want a big red use a mullet head throw it out and wait on your drag to go off.

I used a half of a skipjack, hooked him up and tossed him in the bottom of the ICW and had a fish on in about 2 minutes.

Live mullet has always been my choice for bulls

If you have a cast net, try catching some mullet rigged to the bottom with a nice heavy weight. hook the mullet by the tail area and try to have at least two rods out

I have caught all my bull reds that way

Also in March is when the drum run. I may try to go down to the surf during spring break and wade fish.

X2. Spring break in the surf. You can catch them on almost any bait.
