Great article. I've always wondered something though. How do they know what a fish sees or not? I understand they study the optical rods, cones and all kinds of other things, but how accurate is that? Also, do large mouth bass see differently than stripers? Most bass stay fairly shallow where stripers go very deep. Since most fish adapt to their environment, does that include sight? This article makes it sound like they all see the same. I know some fish in the ocean live so deep they don't even have working eyes. Anyone know?

I may show my ignorance here but I would imagine color absorption is an absolute absorption is greater for longer wavelengths (the red end of the spectrum) than for shorter wavelengths (the blue end of the spectrum). Variables are depth and clarity of water. I would imagine color perception is a variable, which makes what we see different from what a fish or dog may see? I would imagine fish at those depths where eyes don't matter have enhanced senses of a different type? The article is very basic, but it is the stuff that keeps me awake at night. I guess if I was interested enough I would just go research it a bit better. But I have other fish to fry. I just thought that article made some very basic points about color of lures and the variables associated with them in the context of fishing.

I agree, it has to be a variable. I've researched a bunch and it keeps coming back to it's all theories. So we just keep going and hoping the fish want to cooperate. Thanks again for posting the article.

Thanks for sharing that, Terry. Very interesting read on cold day off So sounds like rainbow color lures will cover all variables? But will play with more blue and black colors in the future tto test out the science

Here's the one thing I can add: the UV spectrum is visible to fish at much greater depths than are the standard colors that we can see. If you're fishing stripers/sandies in 40+ feet, why not try a UV/glow jig?

My best all time slab/color for Texoma was and still is blue/silver/white, with purple same combo 2nd. This is in deep water, many trips Terry and I had the high fish count on the boat always with this color combo, we fished the 6" Kansas slabs. The shorter ones did not do as well. I have tried the 3oz yellow/chartruse MTP slab and had good results with it also, not as good as the Kansas style though.

Good article, interesting information. I was a scuba diving addict for about 15 years and dove in all kinds of water from crystal clear rivers inside Yellowstone park to 200 foot visibility in the Caribbean. Some of my diving was in a number of lakes in North Texas. And sadly we don't have the kind of water that allows for really any visibility below about 5 feet. Our algae content is pretty high even in winter, and as you drop below five feet in most of our lakes it is soon PITCH BLACK. I don't know how deep ultraviolet light penetrates but I know at 30 feet with a bright flash light you can't see more than a foot or two. Fish find lures though- so clearly its sound/vibration/flash of color or something. And certain days one color is better than others so they are keying in on something.

Duece, My wife Patsy and I did our qualifying open water dive for our PADI certification on an east texas hot lake in a February about 25 years ago. It was snowing and the cove we had to navigate across by compass was full of trees and I could barely see the compass on my wrist. We navigated across right on the button. When we peeled off our wet suits it was stupid cold. During our dive we didn't see a fish, all we could see was silt and fallen trees. Oh what fun!
