Well I ran up to The Brazos River on Thursday, they stocked trout on the 4th and I figured I would give them a few days to settle in and for the bait chuckers to fill their ice chests. I did not have high expectations as the 3 times I was up there last season the fishing just flat out SUCKED! I arrived at first light and proceeded to my traditional starting point in the pool just above the hwy 16 bridge, I had the River completely to myself so I started with my TFO 5wt and a brown #10 bead head wooly bugger. I caught a fish on my first cast and quickly released him. I changed colors two or three times and caught 5 fish in the first 45 minutes. Things slowed down and I picked up my ultra light with a crawdad crank bait. Caught a couple of perch and two black bass before I moved down river. My secnd favorite spot is just past the rock slide & S curve into the big flat. The trout were busting on top so I went back to a olive bead head wooly bugger alternating between fast strip and slow drift. Much to my pleasant surprise the bite was on and I proceeded to catch another 25-30 trout along with more black bass, a few spotted bass 2 smallmouth bass and numerous perch! After a break for lunch I returned to my spot down stream and by 4pm I had caught over 100+ fish and 7 different species all in one day! I will be honest I haven't had a day like that on the Brazos River in probably 5-6 years! Lots of free time the next few weeks, I hope to hit the River 4-5 times this winter and will make my annual run up to The LMFR in late December Or early Jaunary.....

Great trip!! Those are the kind of days that keep us coming back. Every once in a while it's worth getting up at 4:30 AM, dragging all that equipment around, fighting snags and tangles and losing equipment, LOL!!

Has anyone had any luck lately? Last time I went was a couple days after they stocked it. I went 0'fer and broke my Helios 2 after getting hung up in a tree ... Can't wait to get it back. Orvis customer service is top notch, by the way.

Glad to hear some of those smallmouth that they stocked a few years ago have made it should be a really good river for them to live. I have a place about seven or 8 miles down from the damn fish regularly my buddy owns the place we have caught a ton of really good bass in there. I really wish they would put 50 or so trout in there that were in the 16 inch range when they stock instead of those little bitty farts. Glad you had a great trip.

Both Possum Kingdom State Park and Mineral Wells State Park are within 30 miles of the Dam. I was out there this week ...slow in the morning but pretty good in the late afternoon. Ended the day with a 5lb carp ...not what I was after but on a 3wt it was pretty fun.

We ended up camping in the RV at the BRA Public use area behind the dam. It's an awesome place to camp. Several other groups were also camping, I think most of them were from North Texas Outdoors. Met some cool people and caught a ton of fish.

I was out there a few weeks ago and caught my limit on a blue winged olive. I went this morning (the day after stocking) and didn't catch a single trout. I didn't see a single trout nor did I see or hear of anyone else catch a trout. I did manage one small lmb and a few gills. I guess they are still in shock from being released or maybe they all swam south for the winter.
