I'm thinking of opening a tackle shop. I plan on renting out kayaks and small bass busters.Selling kayaks,bass busters,rods,reels,lures,live bait. Do any of you guys know how much I would make off a sale? example my cost on a revo is $100.00. what would be a good asking price?

I suggest you take the time to really research the idea a lot more. Every brand, product or service is gonna have a different margin. There is no catch all answer. Some things have a large profit margin while things like electronics have a thin margin. Too many variables for a catch all answer. Things like that Revo and other brands will have MAP pricing meaning you have to sell it at a certain price point or you risk losing the right to sell that brand. You are looking at a couple hundred grand to really stock a store to do well. You will be married to that store and it will be your life if you want to see it succeed.

That being said I wish you the best if you choose to do it. Every dream has a starting point. If this is yours then go for it.

Actually I'm asking on here cause I'm on midnights this week so been asleep during the day. Plus i was always taught to ask question no matter how silly it sound. Mark I know what you mean. I don't even have store open yet and I lost sleep last week over it. There is a lot of red tape and bs. When I start this I wont have any kind of payments. As far as building goes and inventory I figure I'll need 150K. I plan on working my full time job as well since we only work half a year and still make good money for area I live in. my goal isn't to make tons of money but i want to retire at 55 and have something to do. don't really want to work swing shift until I'm 62. Plus I think it would be good for my community for kids to have something other to do than get in trouble.

No sir I'm not in metroplex. We are about 2.5 hours drive from any big city. We have a river that is about 4 miles long thru town and another 40+ miles if someone wanted to kayak out into the sticks with 5 different pick up points . Another thought was to become a minn kota dealer/repair guy since the nearest one is 1.5 hours away. The lot that I'm thinking about buying is near the city park and the river that runs thru town. So we would also sell snow cones and possible hamburgers but not sure on the burgers yet. If any of you been to roberts fishing store at falcon lake. That's kinda what I'm trying to accomplish for kayakers and people that dont own a bass boat.

If you open it up I would be interested in sending you some custom painted baits for consignment.

What are your fixed costs? Operating costs? Advertising budget? Have you written a detailed business plan? I'm not trying to discourage you, but these things need to be addressed before you can determine your margins. There's a plethora of great biz-start-up references out there. Get a few, study, & plan. There's no short cut to success. Wish you the best.

Good idea Bradshuflin . I have a friend that makes lures but can't have too many. Land plus making the building, parking lot, and inventory I'm looking at 125,000 to 150,000. I have an idea about how much fixed cost and operating cost will be but I plan on using my income from my full time job to help pay for that expense. I don't think I need much advertising since my store would be at the entrance to the city park. I've also talked to chamber of commerce and they said they are trying to get our river in the texas parks and wildlife as a kayaking trail. Anymore ideas or problems that you may see that I may have overlooked?

I've been self employed and owner of a shop for 7 years. DO NOT try to supplement your new venture income with a regular jobs income. This approach breeds failure. The new venture has to at least support itself. You are approaching this with a "incase I fail" attitude. That will cause you to fail. If your strategy is based on having a second income, you severely need to rethink the idea.

In order for a business to be successful, the business should be the only priority. Also, you SHOULD FEEL LIKE if you don't open the business, you are making a mistake. I opened a business after I made several people rich. Then I decided, why am I making them rich? I should cut out "the middle men"(employers). Haven't looked back. Also, you should immerse yourself into the actual business as an employee for a while to see for yourself what it all involves.

Not to be an [censored]. But it sounds like your plan is kinda shaky. Not a bad idea to open a shop. But not knowing the very minute details of the products, the margins, etc is a REAL DISASTER waiting to happen.

Just my .02. Yours will be a MUCH larger investment.

Im sure if he felt the same way as you he would say so. Hes a grown man. im sure he would much rather hear honest opinions of people who are trying to help him than get the "go for it, you can do it" answers.
