Dumb question but here it goes. I purchased a boat about 7 years or so ago. Have all the paperwork from the sale, but never put it in my name. Have a guy now that wants to buy it. How much trouble am I going to have selling it to him/him getting it in his name? Looked on the texas parks & wildlife website, and it doesn't look like its going to be that difficult (think it was going to cost $600 or so). Am I understanding it correctly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Its definitely something you should do next time you purchase a boat, which is to get it in your name asap. Its "illegal" to sell a vessel or motor in someone elses name. The transfer for the buyer makes it a headache for sure!

You have a problem as the TP&W forms have changed from what they were 7 years ago. I think you are going to have to start over. Hope you know where previous owner is.

How have you been registering the boat for the past seven years without it being in your name?

I purchased the boat and shortly after my mother got sick. I took care of her until she passed away, and have never recovered financially.

Unfortunately, the previous owner passed away some time ago.

Just find out who is able to sign for the estate. His wife or a child. TP&W has a special form for this.

Let TPWD handle it and keep good records of who you talk to and what is said. Like every other government agency, they are probably not responsible for giving out bad information, but if it comes down to a hassle, you are much better off with a paper trail.

Yep. I just talked to them about registering my boat which was past the 21 days. They told me that the way that they see it is that until the boat is registered, it doesn't belong to you and is illegal for you to sell it. They're gonna want their tax money from you and then again from the new buyer. Makes it a mess and can lose a sell.
