Planning to go sometime this summer. Is there Tarpon in the bay there? Bringing a 24' center console, in shore off shore advice?

I've not fished for tarpon there however there's great flats fishing for redfish. The trout action isn't bad either. I usually drag my bay boat to Pensacola to fish offshore within 7-8 miles for amberjacks, red snapper etc. Pensacola is a lot less pressured and you can typically find decent fish on public spots.
When coming out of Pensacola pass in the morning, look for the group of boats...they'll be on the Russian freighter making bait. Easy to catch all you need right there.

Tarpon will be running the beach not typically in the bay. Get offshore every chance you can. That's what Destin is famous for.

we took out 22' pathfinder there last year and didn't have any luck in the bay. best bay fishing was at the bridge in the pass(redfish), but the tourists and other traffic was horroble. we went to a couple rubble piles offshore and had better luck. mostly small stuff, nothing to bring home.
had been a lot of rain and the bay was blackish clear water with no visible bait. locals said the run off from the neighborhoods and golf courses had the water messed up, i don't know, but we went on up to Pt. St. Joe and had a blast catching specks, reds and diving for scallops.

JMit, we are doing the same as you. We are renting a house about 15 miles past Destin and dragging the boat with us mid June. Hope we both have good luck.

I've had a boat in Destin for almost a year. The bad thing about the area is the crowds. We had our best luck offshore past 12-15 miles. It's common to be fishing a wreck and have several boats pull up within casting distance. It always bothered me since I used to fish POC with hardly any offshore traffic. Fishing can be great, we caught wahoo, tuna, lots of amberjack, cobia, & Kings.
I recommend using live bait if possible unless your as big of an artificial bait guy as me. Good luck

Thanks Chuck, I have been fishing port a, a couple time. I haven't braved more than a few miles off shore there. The day it would have worked off shore we were not set up for it.
