 Advice on bathtubs

Im redoing the kids bathroom and we need to replace the old builder-grade tub. Our kids are in high school so they will be out of the house within 4-5 years. We aren't planning to sell the house any time soon but we want this bathroom to be a good bathroom for kids/families. This is a regular tub with a shower above. I wouldnt mind a one-piece tub/shower if we can find a nice one that doesnt look cheap.
There are several choices at Home Depot and Lowes and if you look online there are even more. We are on a budget but we want to get something that will look good and last for a long time. Any advice on materials, finishes, pros & cons, etc.??

Really depends on what your budget is, but IMO I would customize it and use tile.....

Do you have a tub in the master? What most have gone to is a nice walk-in shower in the guest bath as long as there is a tub in the master bathroom. This is what we did because no one ever used the tub. Removed it and made a nice large walk-in shower with frame less glass in the guest bath. This is just an example:

Nice bathroom, but I doubt their budget is $7k, could be but I doubt it.

The new steel tubs are junk. I was a refinisher for several years. They tend to rust from the back. Eventually get week and bust through. If you can find an old cast iron tub it will last forever. It can be refinished even powder coated.
The thing is. To remove a tub, you also have to remove some tile. And usually the door frame. It can get expensive. They do sale fiberglass tubes that are less expensive. And can get it in two pieces for the walls also. With those. Support underneath is very important. They will crack if not.

There is an outfit called "Bath Fitters" that you might want to look at. They do a precision acrylic overlay of existing, with new Fixtures, etc. They are about half of what Aquat-Tech does, but Aqua-Tech replaces more. We just signed a contract with Bath Fitters to do our second bathroom. It will cost us about 1/2 of what Aqua-Tech charged for the first one, which included removing the tub and replacing with a walk in shower, acrylic walls and new fixtures. It also included replacing the sinks and sink tops.

I don't know your budget, but this is what I would do. Small walk in shower with small hot tub (after the age of 5, people use showers, not bathtubs)
