My favorite place to fish in the winter is the Sabine from 79 to 2517. But, if I can't get someone to meet me there, I have the "shuttle problem" and can't go. Is there anyone in that area that needs to pick up a couple bucks by running a shuttle? Jane told me her crew might do it if someone is not guiding, but they have a lot of business that keeps them busy.

I'll work with you on that. I had a blast out there last year on the one trip I took. We camped at Jane's place and worked up river a couple of miles. It was not fast water at the time so it was pretty easy to go up a couple of miles . I was thinking about taking the PA this time since there was nothing to prevent it in the area. Not so sure about the area your referencing, but I'm definitely game to try another stretch...

Edit- I looked at that stretch on Google Earth. I'll bring the RIDE 115!

I like fishing that stretch also and have the same problem with shuttles. This year I'm thinking of putting in at 59, hitting the black shoals if the water level's right, and taking out 79. But it will be March before I'm able to go. If yall are still wanting to fish them, maybe we could work something out, like a mutual shuttle.

I'd like to do that too. I'd really like to see the shoals. We fished Feb28/Mar1 last year and it was great at Janes place (River Ridge). Everyone we ran across said it wouldn't last much longer so we didn't go back. I know a bunch of fly guys went back the following weekend though, and killed em again...

Let me know maybe a week before you go. If things work out I am going several times this year. A lot of things have to be right for the bite to be great. Last year I caught so many 2pounds + that my arms got so tired that I had to quit fishing. One thing about the shoals is you can always catch big gar. I caught a 16 pounder a couple years ago. The part from 79 to 2517 is just above Janes. The 2517 bridge is about 7 miles upstream an the 79 bridge is about 21 miles upstream. The big boats can't get thru the rapids, so you are pretty much by yourself. We did not see another person along that stretch last year.

Just bumping this thread up toward the top so it will be easy to find when I set a date to go. Might try to work out some kind of shuttle with someone.

I finally solved my shuttle problem on the Sabine. I found a guy that works at a local church that shuttled me. He met me at my takeout and rode with me in my car to my put in and then drove my car back to the take out. No problem at all. I pretty much gave the lady that recommended him the third degree about honesty, dependability, trustworthiness, and on and on. She said I would not have any problems with him and she was correct. I paid him $30. I think he will shuttle anyone if he is available. I don't want to post his info, but if you will PM me, I will get it to you.

That looks like a good stretch, do you typically do this in one day?

The other times I fished the shoals, I've continued downstream all the way to FM 2517 and took a little over two days to do it. But I am gonna try to do 59 to 1794 in a day. It's 3.2 miles to the shoals and about 3 miles after that to 1794. I think that will leave me plenty of time to fish. I just hope all the fish I catch don't weigh my canoe down too much. grin

I always spend one or two nights on the river. I live in Coppell and driving down and back in one day doesn,t leave a lot of fishing time. Even tho there are a lot of fish, you sometimes have to find them. Last weekend they weren't biting very well because of the last rain I would catch one here and there and finally found them and caught 15 in one spot.
