I can use some help. I grew up fishing salt water which sure seems a heck of a lot easier to catch something. I have been struggling as of late and not catching any fish. I fear that us getting skunked when we go fishing is going to make the kids get bored with it. I hate for them to sit inside and play with the electronics. I prefer to get them outdoors.
I took my son out fishing today and we started at Colorado Crossing and moved on to White Rock Creek to get away from the wind. There were several people there catching fish. We were just not one of them. I did not have the lighter tackle and when I tried to throw something small I had to put too much weight on it and I kept getting stuck on submerged tree limbs. It looked like everyone else had UL spinners and were able to toss out some light jigs; and without having to put too much weight on it theirs stayed closer to the surface and avoided the underwater jungle that must exist there. It was also kind of crowded at the turn in the creek so it was hard to get to where you could get in the deeper section of the creek without throwing over someone else's line.
Is everyone pretty much throwing ultralight tackle from the bank? What kind of fish can you catch when the water is getting cold on a day like today (overcast and in the 40's pretty much all day)? The wind was awful as well. I was thinking we would see crappie but what I saw looked like all Yellow Bass and maybe a few undersized crappie.
Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated. I need to break this bad streak.
Thanks in advance.

You could try swapping out your line with lower lb line and also add a cork, that could increase the weight your throwing but also prevent the jigs from getting caught on stuff. I have a 7 ft ugly stik inshore lite with 8 lb stren Fluorocast and it casts small jigs and small rattle traps just fine.

The rod and reel you use depends on the lures you depend on using.. I wouldn't use a baitcaster for casting a 1/16oz crappie jig. Get you a Light-Medium action spinning rod, with 8lb test line and you should be set for casting smaller lures. You said WRC, everyone usually fishes that creek for white bass/yellow bass/crappie this time of the year.
It is very possible to catch fish on days like today.. Some of my best fishing have come on flat out miserable days, whether there was snow on the ground or raining cats and dogs outside I have caught fish.
Also IMO I like using rods in the 6'6-7' range.. I feel I have enough control to fight the fish and the longer length of the rod gives me longer cast.

Or you can go the cheap route with an ultralight spinning reel, a 5-5.5 ul rod, 4-6 lb mono, and you can toss the heck out of jigs as light as 1/64th, but I usually stick to 1/32 or 1/16th. I often use a bobber, either with a stopper("cigar style")or put a bead and peg, so I can adjust the depth I want to fish it. If you don't want your kids to get bored, get em some spincast reels with light line, some #4 hooks, small splitshots and some nightcrawlers. The yellow bass in White rock creek will wear them ragged with a setup like that and they will have a blast. Don't get the little snoopy rods or ninja turtles. not enough backbone to make good casts or hooksets. One piece 5 footers are easy enough to handle for a kid.
And as for catching fish on days like we had this weekend, this is mild stuff! AND WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE REAL CRAPPIE SEASON as far as creeks are concerned! Hope your kiddos get a chance to have some fun, that's what it's all about!
Rudy !

It depends on what you are fishing for. Right now Catfish are hot. Crappie and Sand Bass are making their moves up the creeks and are starting to turn on. Large Mouth Bass on the other hand are starting to slow down some. Happens in the winter. I would see if there's pond in your area that is on the fishing map. Read the review and select what species your going to go after. I have different gear for each type of fishing that I'm going to do. After you figured out what fish you want to target, you can ask the question of, "What do I need to do to catch X fish?"
~You won't catch any fish if you don't try!

Thank you for the suggestions. We are about to take a one week vacation in FL and my mom lives on Florida Bay. If I have any luck there I will share some pics. I have been itching to get out the past couple of days, but the cold rain is making me watch fishing videos instead.

I caught a 3lb bass today using a jig. Green pumkin and bright blue/with a craw trailer. I was throwing from the bank with a Ultra Heavy action Steez "Frog Rod" with 80lb braid and a 6ft 15lb Flourocarbon leader. I was the only one catching anything in a 4acre pond. About 12-15 people fishing. They were using anything from live bait to spinners and t-rig worms. All kinds of spinning rods. I'm sure their line choices ran the gamut too.
You need to focus on the matter at hand. Every cast. Line and rod doesn't matter as much as what cha are using as bait. And where you are casting to and how you work it. Lol. If you are fishing today, after the cold rain for days, you are NOT gonna catch ANYTHING on top water, shallow water, or muddy water. Look for deep, clear water. And concentrate on what's given to you. And work the bait slowly. Sometimes. And rip it too. Never know. I've caught fish every day for the last few weeks and it's been something different evey day. Different lakes too. Just have to adapt. Don't over think it.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Oh I forgot. From my January trip to Florida. I caught a Jack and 2 bonnet head sharks the day before we left. This was the larger of the two. I was under the #5 bridge using live shrimp on Islamorada Key I believe. All were caught & released since we were leaving the next day.
