Me and the wife got out to Cedar creek yesterday evening around 430 . we pull up to our normal fishing area to anchor up and seen something i had never seen in a lake . Catfish were just rolling everywhere and coming up to the surface constantly several were swimming right up to the boat . We caught several good eatin size but they were just acting crazy . you could here there jumping everywhere and every one we caught jumped out of water and acted like a bass when you set the hook .My question is are they just in a feeding freny or what ?

Saw the same thing this weekend in deep and shallow water. Couldn't tell what they were feeding on or if they were feeding. Only know that while they were rolling, really didn't catch much. Once the activity slowed, the bite got a bit better.

After reading Drawout's post I think they were looking for ducks.

They were looking to see if Jackie was out there so they could go hide.

After reading Drawout's post I think they were looking for ducks. About 2 years ago, I hit a duck and watched it fall about 200 yards from where we were. It was a little windy that day and by the time I got the boat out to go get it, it had drifted further out in the middle. When I pulled up, a nice size blue cat was eating the feathers that had been coming out of the duck and getting close to my bird. The duck was bleeding so I just always figured the blood smell brought him to it. Sense that day, I've noticed on some winter days the blue cats are on the top. I just always figured they are feeding.

When they're doing that you can present baits to them right on the surface and catch a ton of fish. The rig I use for this type of fishing is by tying a heavy leader about 50 to 60 lb test onto my mainline with an albright knot so that the knot will go through my levelwinds and then put a bead then swivel then another bead and then a teamcatfish bumper on then another bead then tie a stop knot about a foot above the end of the leader. I use a short dropper loop knot for this then cut the dropper loop off leaving about 1/4 inch tag ends sticking out just to get the dropper loop out of the way. I use this knot so that when I get a fish on the swivel will slide down the line and stop at that knot. tie the sinker on bottom. then tie about a foot and a half hook leader on the swivel and use a 5\0 circle hook and float on the hook leader so that when this rig hits the water the float will send the baited hook to the surface. This rig is deadly when you see most fish in the area suspended and surfacing.
I also use two 3oz float rigs with 8 inch hook leaders too when this is happening but you can only use a couple of floats if there's wind or current as they'll all end up drifting together ... the rig described above stays put until you get a fish on.

no picture .... it's pretty simple ... just got a heavy leader with a swivel sliding up n down it tied to hook and float in the middle of the hook leader instead of on the heavy leader ... the beads just bump up against the albright knot on top when you cast it out and then when a fish takes off with it it'll slide down to the sinker stop knot but you'll see the fish take off with it before that so you just start reeling when you see the rod tip surge.
I thought everyone could see it but just forget about the beads n bumper. just go with two beads ... one on both sides of the swivel and if you're fishing 12 ft deep you want the 60 lb leader to be at least as long as the depth but I go with two feet longer than the depth so that after tying knots it's going to allow the bait to sit right on the surface. kinda like a dog run cable .. just picture the albright knot as the stop on one end and the stop knot above the sinker as the other end and the swivel is the slider and chain is the hook leader with float and hook on it like a santee cooper float and leader.

I drew a picture ... this is how I'd do it if I were fishing 10 ft of water or if I wanted to present a bait at about 12 ft deep.

Much clearer now, thank you
My personal best is still swimming out there just getting bigger. One of these days I will quit feeding it.
