Nice fish!!!! Do they fight hard? By far the toughest fish up here, and possibly the hardest fighting freshwater fish there is, pound for pound. Nothing else up here compares, not big musky, nor carp, etc. Sturgeons basically don't quit, and their bodies are complete muscle, similar to sharks. They often jump out of the water completely when fighting, much like alligator gar. Once you get them boat side, they typically plunge straight back to the bottom and hold tight, and repeat a number of times before tiring. We were fishing them in 34 to 38 feet of water, so quite the job to get them back up each time. Caught using heavy rods using 8000 series reels spooled with 80 lbs braid. 3/0 or 4/0 Octopus hooks with 2 giant earthworms as bait. Despite their size, the take is extremely subtle, basically undetectable unless you keep a finger on your line all the time. Kind of hard in the rain and near freezing temps up here, but if you don't set immediately, they often spit before you know they even took the bait. Occasionally, they'll hook themselves, so planning to try again next week using hair rigs, something which nobody around here does. Hopefully they'll bite, as the sturgeon season closes at the end of the month, after which time it's prohibited to target them.
PB common = 41 lbs PB mirror = 22.5 lbs PB buff = 26 lbs

Thanks. Tentatively have 1 more sturgeon outing next week before season ends, going to attempt them on a modified hair rig to avoid freezing my fingers off holding the line trying to feel the subtle takes.

Unfortunately, never made it out for sturgeon again this week due to high winds, and sturgeon fishing here closes tomorrow, so modified hair rig will have to wait for next year. On the flip side, caught this fat beast on our first pass this morning, barely 15 minutes after launching:
